UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY J. FORSTER, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 418,511, dated December 31, 1889.'
Application filed March 21, 1889. Serial No. 304,218. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, HENRY J. FORSTER, a citizen of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to the construction of tobacco-pipes; and it consists in constructing the pipe-bowl from the shell of various kinds of nuts, as the walnut, pecan, &c., with a stem-opening therein; in polishing or ornamenting the external surface of said bowls to impart an attractive appearance thereto; in
filling said bowls with tobacco, and in sealing the top and stem-openings in said bowls with removable or porous-paper caps.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box containing a suitable number of my improved pipe-bowls and a stem as put up for sale. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of one of the bowls. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of one of the bowls with the stem attached.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates a bowl formed from a pecan-nut of suitable size, the latter being cut away at one end, as at B, to form a filling-aperture, and cored to receive a filling of tobacco C. At the opposite end of the bowl I provide an aperture D for the insertion of one end of a suitable stem E. (Shown in Fig. 3.) In order that the tobacco may be retained withinthe bowl, I seal over the filling-aperture a piece of paper F and close the stemaperture with a light piece of paper G. In this way there is no danger of the tobacco escaping from the bowl when packed in a box for sale; and in order that the buyer may readily determine the quality of the tobacco contained in the bowls before purchasing, I use thin porous paper to close the filling and stem apertures of the bowl, as will be understood.
As hereinbefore stated, it is one of the objects of my invention to place the bowls prepared as above described, and containing a filling of tobacco, upon the market ready for use, and for this purpose I employ a suitable box H, adapted to contain a number of said bowls and a stem, as illustrated in Fig. 1,
said box being suitably labeled to indicate the quality of the tobacco and the kind of bowl used, whereby the buyer can select the kind he desires to purchase.
In order that the bowls may present as attractive an appearance as possible, they may be polished or suitably carved for this purpose.
It will be seen that each of the bowls contains just enough tobacco for an ordinary smoke, and that when used they can be thrown aside. This, as Will be seen, is very convenient for smokers, and is especially suitable for tourists use, and obviates the necessity of carrying a pipe and tobacco separately. 7
As is obvious, the cost of preparing the bowls is very trivial, anda box of them filled with tobacco and containing a suitable stem can be prepared and sold at a small cost.
Furthermore, I have found that by using nutshells a peculiarly pleasant flavor is imparted tothe tabacco when smoking that is not attained by the ordinary clay or cob pipes now used.
By using the porous-paper sealing-covers for the filling and stem apertures in the bowl the pipe-stem can readily be pushed through the paper covering the stem-aperture into the bottom of the bowl and the paper covering the filling-aperture can be readily removed by the application of alight thereto.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A pipe-bowl consisting of a nutshell provided with a filling-aperture and a stem-aperture, a filling of tobacco, and a seal for each of said apertures, as set forth.
2. A pipe-bowl consisting of a nutshell provided with a filling-aperture and a stem-aperture, a filling of tobacco, and a removable seal for each of said apertures.
3. Apipe-bowl consist-ing of a nutshell provided with a filling-aperture and a stem-aperture, a filling of tobacco, and a porous-paper seal for each of said apertures.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY J. FORSTER.
