UNITED STATES 1 PATENT OFFICE.
ADALBERT VON SEBASTIANI, OF NEW? YORK, N. Y.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,492, dated June 23, 1896.
Application filed January 14, 1896. Serial N0. 575A68. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADALBERT VON SEBAS TIANI, a subject of the Emperor of Austria- Hungary, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a pipe that will be free from defects usually met with in pipes of ordinary construction.
By my invention I provide a pipe of a simple and inexpensive character, light in weight, and containing passages not liable to be clogged by impurities that tend to impair the draft, and which also prevents excessive heating of the smoke that passes to the mouth, admits of the bowl of the pipe remaining comparatively cool for handling, and affording ample facilities for cleaning.
The accompanying drawing represents a longitudinal section of a pipe constructed according to my invention.
a designates the bowl of a pipe, which may be of any suitable material, such as meerschaum, wood, or common clay, and of any form and ornamentation. It is provided with a detachable bottom section a, secured to it by a screw-thread or other suitable means.
a is a draft-passage formed in the bowl and extends from the upper portion thereof to the stem a. This stem may be integral with the bowl as in ordinary clay and other pipes, or maybe detachably connected therewith. The
stem may also be located to connect with the passage a either at the upper, lower, or any intermediate part of the bowl as may be desired.
b is a receptacle for the tobacco and made of any suitable material, such as meerschaum, clay, or tin. It is made slightly smaller than the interior of-the bowl, in order to leave an annular space Z2 around it, serving as a draftpassage, and also to prevent heat from being transmitted to any great extent to the bowl.
The receptacle 1) is perforated at its base portion to afford draft, and is here shown as secured within the bowl a by having its upper end made to tightly fit a corresponding upper end portion ofthe said bowl.
0 is a cup-shaped receptacle for holding material (1, adapted to absorb nicotine and other impurities of the tobacco, and for this purpose cotton may be used. If desired, it may be flavored in order to impart a more agreeable taste in using the pipe. This cup is secured to the bottom section of the bowl a by a screw or other suitable means, and in such a manner as to leave a slight space 0 below the surface of the cup and around its sides for draft.
The bottom and side portions of the cup are perforated to insure sufficient draft. The upper rim of the cup is adapted to fit the bottom portion of the receptacle 1), to form a tight joint when the bottom section of the bowl is fastened in place.
By this construction the smoke from the tobacco will be drawn through the absorbent material, and nicotine and other impurities will be collected within the receptacle, instead of being allowedto clog the tobacco-receptacle and draft-passages.
When the absorbent material has been sufficiently used, it can be readily removed and new material substituted.
It will be seen also that the clearance-spaces around the receptacles b and 0 form an airchamber, tending to prevent the heat of the burning tobacco from radiating and rendering the exterior surface of the bowl too hot for handling.
I claim The combination in a pipe, of a bowl having its bottom portion provided with a detachable section and its upper portion provided with a draft-passage communicating with a pipe-stem; a tobacco-receptacle having a perforated bottom secured within the bowl and arranged with an annular space around it communicating with the draft-passage; a perforated receptacle for holding absorbent material secured to the bottom section of the bowl, and through which the tobacco-receptacle communicates with the draft-passage, the said perforated receptacle having a clearance-space around and below it communicating with the draft-passage and provided with a rim adapted to form a tight joint with the bottom portion of the tobacco-receptacle when secured in place, substantially as described.
ADALBERT VON SEBASTIANI.
