UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE BENJAMIN PHELPS, OF BREIVSTER, NEW YORK.
COMBINED SPONGE AND PENCIL HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 418,220, dated December 31, 1889.
Serial No- 3l0,529- (No model.)
PHELPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brewster, in the county of Putnam and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Sponge and Pencil Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has reference to certain new and useful improvements in combined pencil and sponge holders for use in connection with slates; and it consists in the details of construction and combination of elements, such as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and then specifically designated by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improvement; Fig. 2, a rear elevation, and Fig. 3 an end view.
Similar letters denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
A is a frame made of a single piece of sheet metal and having sockets a 6, formed bycutting tongues in said frame and curling them over into cylindrical form.
B is a hollow bead formed at the top of the frame, and O is a ring, having depending therefrom legs 0 cl, extending within said bead in such a manner as to afford a hinge-connection between said frame and ring. This ring is preferably made from wire, and the legs 0 d are secured thereto either rigidly or pivot-ally, as maybe desired.
D are ears depending from the frame, and by means of which the latter maybe secured to the frame of a slate.
The ring is adapted to contain a sponge, while the sockets contain pencils. Both the ring and the sockets have a spring action sufficient to insure enough friction to hold the sponge or pencils.
I claim 1. A combined sponge and pencil holder consisting of a sheet-metal frame capable of attachment to the frame of a slate or the like and provided with sockets and a ring pivoted to said metal frame, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the frame having at its upper end a hollow bead and provided with sockets, of the ring having depending therefrom legs extending within said bead, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THEODORE BENJAMIN PHELPS,

ABRAM J. MILLER, R. A. CRONENBERGER.
