SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,623, dated December 17, 1889. Application filed October 15, 1889. Serial No. 827,061 (No model.)

vented certain new and useful Improvements in Awning-Blind Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in awning-blind hinges.

The object is to provide a set of hinges which will admitof the outward swingof the lower end of the shutter, in addition to the ordinary opening swing of the shutter, without disturbing the engagement of the pintles in their sockets, and to further provide selflocking hinges of the abovecharacter in which the leaves of the hinge may be rigidly secured'to the building and shutter, re spectively.

With these ends in view my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed'out in the claims.

A represents the stationary section of the leaf of the hinge which is to be fastened to the building, and A represents the movable section of said leaf. The section A is provided with a vertically-extended flattened end a, which may he let into a recess formed in the casing, and is provided with screwholes for fastening it in position. Its outer end is projected in the form of a flat tongue or, having vertical abutments a at its inner end. In the upper hinge the abutments a extend from the bottom edge of the tongue only a part of its width, to enable the section A to tilt, as will hereinafter appear, while in the lower hingeit preferably extends throughout the entire wid th of the tongue, to form an extended bearing for the movable section A, and so serve to steady the shutter when the parts A A of the hinge are in locked adj ustnient.

The section A of the hinge is provided at its inner end with a recess B, the walls of which embrace the opposite sides of the tongue or. (See Fig. L.)- The two sections are united by pins or bolts Z), which extend laterally through the walls of the recess B and through the tongue a. The leaf of the hinge which is fastened to the shutter is denoted by 0. The inner end of the upper section A has its upper corners rounded, as shown at b to free it from cramping against the upper end of the abutments a and the pintle on the lower section A is provided with a removable cap E or other abutment of any wellknown or approved form to prevent the section A from dropping out of position when the same is released from the section A and the bottom of the shutter swung outward.

Both upper and lower hinges effectually prevent the sagging of the shutter by the engagement of the ends of the sections A and A with the lower portions of the abutments a It is evident that any well-known and approved locking device might be substituted for the removable pin or bolt 1), and that various other slight changes in the form and construction of the several parts might be resorted to without materially departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with a hinge-section adapted to be fixed to the building and a hinge-leaf adapted to be fixed to a shutter, of an intermediate movable section having a pintle-and-socket connection with the shutter-leaf and a fastening for securing the intermediate section to the hinge-section at the building, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with an upper hinge consisting of a leaf for attachment to a shut ter, a section for attachment to a building, and an intermediate section having a pintleand-socket connection with the section at the building, of a lower hinge consisting of a leaf for attachment to a shutter, a section for attachment to a building, and an intermediate section having a pintle-and-socket connection with the shutter-leaf and a separable connection with the section at the building, substantially as set forth.

3. The herein-described hinge, consisting of a leaf adapted to be fixed to a shutter and a sectional leaf, one section of the sectional leaf being provided with a vertical abutment, and the other section having an engagement at one end with the said abutment and at its opposite end having a pintle-and-socket engagement with the shutter-leaf, substantially as set forth.

4. The herein-described hinge, consisting of a leaf formed in one piece and provided with a socket and a leaf formed in two sections, one fixed and the other movable, the movable section being provided with a pintle and a removable abutment on the pintle, for the purpose substantially as set forth.
