4 `zl`his invention relates to an adjustable partitiondesigned primarily for use in connection `v`ith the pigeon-holes or similarV compartm ents or inclosedreceptacles in oftice furniture and the like, usually adapted for the reception of papers and files.

It frequently happens that the depth of pigeon-holes is greater than the length of the papers to be storedwor placed in them, in which case the papers "are liable to become lodged in t-he rear part oflsaid pigeon-holes, making them more orless inaccessible and their removal difficult. f

The object of my invention is to overcome theseobjections; and to this end I provide a movable partition adapted to tit within a pigeon-hole or similar compartment, and adapted for adjustable engagement with'the Walls of the pigeon-hole or compartment, whereby the partition may be secured in any desired position therein.

The invention consists in the features of construction and combination of parts herein described, and pointed out in the appendedA claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a pigeon-hole and portions of others having partitions applied 'thereto embodying my invention, the same being taken on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view of a modification. Fig. 4 is a horizontal'sectional view on the lin 4 4 of Fig. 3.

A indicates pigeon-holes, having a rear wall a, horizontal walls a', and vertical walls a2.

B indicates a partition or movable back wall adapted to iit loosely within saidA pigeonhole to permit it being readily moved back and forth while in a vertical position, or removed entirely therefrom.

C, Figs. 1 and 2, indicates a cam pivoted at c upon the partition B, near one edge thereof. The cam C is provided with acam-surface c', adapted to extend beyond the edge of the partition, and with an operating' handle or leverCl extending upwardly from the cam. Said operating-lever is preferably located at the rear or inner face of the partition, and when so located the partition is provided with a slot or opening' b, which slot or opening is arranged transversely to the handle andat the front of the same. The lever is operated from the front of said partition by inserting the fingers through the said slot.

The cam C is herein shown as actin g against the bottom of the pigeon-hole; but. it may be arranged at the top or one side thereof.

It is obvious that by moving the lever-handle to the right or left the cam-surface will be caused either to clamp or release the partition.

In using this device it is preferable to in- Asert the fore and middle fingers through the slot or opening b at opposite sides of the le ver handle and place it in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The partition is placed within the pigeon-hole while the iingers are engaged with-the aperture and lever thereof in the manner above stated,and moved to tho desired point and placed orl held in a vertical position, after which the lever is thrown to the other side of the slot, whereby the cam-surface is caused to engage the side of t-he pigeon-hole and thereby clamps the partition iirmly in position. A pigeon-hole of any desired depth may th us be conveniently made. It will be noted that the front or exposed face of the partition is free from projections.

are turned or bent forward to" provide handles b5 b5, which project through the slot or opening b. b is a spiral spring interposed between the handles l1 if and held in position by studs DT DT thereon. The springs press the jaws outwardly, so that their serrated edges will clamp against the sides of the pigeonhole and thereby hohl the partition firmly in place. The operation of adjusting or removing the partition by means of the handles b5 is obvious.

It will be evident that this invention can be put to various uses not referred to herein without departure from the spirit of my invention. I wish it. also understood that I do not intend to restrict myself to the exact features of construction herein set forth and shown, but reserve the right to make all changes coming within the essence of my invention, as set forth in the appended claims.

I claim as my inventionl. The combiuation,with a pi geon-hole open at its front only and having flat walls, of a movable partition provided with a clamping device adapted to engage the walls of the pigeon-hole or compartment, whereby the space for papers in front of the partition may be varied in depth.

2. The combination,with a pigeon-hole open at its front only and having Hat walls, of an adj ustable partition provided with a suitable aperture, and having a clamping device arranged on its rear face engaging the walls of the pigeon-hole and adapted to be operated from its front face through the said aperture.

3. The eombinatiomwith a pigeon-hole open at its front end only and having fiat walls, of an adjustable partition therefor, said partition being provided on its rear face with a clamping device adapted to engage the Walls of the compartments and provided with a handle for actuating the same, and an opening in said partition in front of said handle.

4. The combination,with a pigeon-hole open at its front end only and having flat walls, of an adjustable partition provided with a clamping device consisting of a cam and a handle for actuating the same, said cam and the opposite edge of the partition being adapted to engage opposite walls of the pigeon-hole.

5. The combination,with a pi geen-hole open at its front end only and having flat walls, of an adjustable partition therefor provided with a clamping device arranged on its rear face, consisting of an actuating-handle and a cam for engaging the walls of said pigeon-hole, stop-pins for limiting the movement of said handle, and an aperture in said partition in front of said handle.
