Description

(No M0ae1.)f K v j J. I'. 'MAEDER VENT.
No. 417,435. Y Patented Deo. 17, 1889.
:t ;".2.'/;//fy- UNITED STATES 'PATENT OFFICE. l
JOHN F. MAEDER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS,
VENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,435, dated December 17, 1889. l Application filed October 8, 1889. Serial No. 326,311. (No model.) I
subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook; and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vents,`of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to an improvement in theclass of vents used with `barrels. to allow air to pass in as the liquid contents are drawn off, and more especially with barrels containing liquids charged with carbonio-acid gas, as beer, ale, and the like, to permit the ingress of air necessary to produce the internal pressure for effecting the discharge of the liquid contents on opening the faucet, but without permitting` the escape of carbonio-acid gas through the vent-opening either during such discharge or while the faucet is closed.
The object of my improvement is to provide such a vent of simple construction, which shall permit ready access to its parts for cleansing purposes, and which shall serve effectively its purpose and particularly in its function of preventing` the contents of the barrel on which it is used'from becoming Y flat by losing its enlivening constituentcarbonio-acid gas.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l shows my improved ventin elevation, and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
The vent A involves ahollow body portion r, which should taper, as shown, from near its upper closed end to its opposite open end, or at least be contracted toward the end which is driven into the vent-openingin the barrel or keg, and a tubular branch q, extending at an angle (preferably a right angle) from near the enlarged end or head of the body-portion r, the
- branch q being closed at its outer extremity and containing in its under side a screw-plug having a centrall opening o, in which extends the stem n of a valve n, having its seat in the inner end of the opening o.
The device may be formed of any suitable metal; but I prefer to cast it of malleable iron, with the branch q integral with the body portion, but then in the form of a solid extension, requiring subsequently to be bored out. The boring is performed from the outer end of the branch, and thus affords an opening entirely through it, requiring that it be closed at the outer end. To effect this closing, I prefer to use a screw-plug m, since the latter is easily adjustable and removable to vpermit ready cleaning of the interior of the branch and body portion.
For the more thorough cleansing of the device, which may be required periodically, it should, while separate from any receptacle with which it is designed for use, have steam blown through it, which is most readily accomplished by introducing the steam at the contracted open end of the part r after having removed the plug p or m, or both plugs.
As will be understood from the foregoing description and inspection of the drawings, the device when driven into the vent-opening of a barrel normally seals such ventopening, since the valve n is then against its seat; but that when the faucet is opened to draw off the contents the valve is raised bythe inuX of air to close only 1,when the faucet is turned off.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A vent A, comprising, in combination, a body portion r, having a lateral tubular eX- tension q, provided with a lateral opening containing an adjustable and removable plug p, having an opening o, a valve fn, seated in the tubular extension over and having its stem n in the opening o, and a plug m, removably inserted into the outer end of the extension q, substantially as described.
