UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN lVILSON, OF NElV YORK, AND ALLAN MASON, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNORS TO HERBERT H. SANDERSON, TRUSTEE, OF NElV YORK, N. Y.
HYDROCARBON-BU RN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,302, dated December 17,1889.
Application filed A g 3, 1888. Serial No. 281,893. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN ILSON and ALLAN MAsoN, citizens of the Unit-ed States, and residents of New York city, in the connty and State of New York, and Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists of a contrivance for providing a simple and efficient injector-burner attachment adapted for being applied to the furnace by merely setting it in position before the same and in connection with the furnacedoorway, and for being as readily detached simply by the removal of it whenever it may be desired to resort to coal or other like fuel again, or for replenishing a coal fire when oil is used therewith, all as hereinafter fully described, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, which represents a sectional elevation of our improved detachable burner and a boiler-furnace to which it is applied as for use.
\V e provide a portable stand or bench 61, preferably having vertically-adjustable legs Z), and arrange the burner on it, using a hood or case c to surround and partly inclose the burner, and having a nozzle (Z to enter the 0 fire-doorway e, and a collar or pipe-thimble f to close the slack space around the nozzle, also preferably having the enlarged and perforated middle section 9 and the funnelshaped outer end 71, in which hood we ar- 3 5 range the burner consisting of the small central mixing and combining tube 2' and the larger surrounding tube j,with the steam-jet nozzle 7c, located in the combining-tube, and the oil-feed pipe I, arranged to deliver the oil so as to drip on the nozzle and break up into small particles as it flows into or upon the jet of steam issuing from the nozzle, said steamnozzle and oil-feeder preferably having connection with the steam-boiler n and the oil- 4 5 supply tank 0, respectively, by means of flexible pipes k and Z, allowing the burner-stand to be shifted without detaching the pipes, so that when it is desired to use the hydrocarbon-burner in conjunction with a coal fire the burner may be conveniently shifted out of the way and back again when the coal fire is to be replenished or when it may be desirable to shift said burner for any purpose; but the burner may be connected by rigid metallic pipes except when it is desired to so shift it.
The hood 0 affords protection to the burner as well as support, and facilitates the induction of the air for promoting combustion, besides closing the portions of the doorway- 6o openings exterior to the burner. It also prevents excessive radiation of heat from the burner, both by the cooling effect of the air driven in from its outer end and by drawing the surroundingair through its perforations, the induction of which through the perforations is facilitated by the enlargement of that part of the hood.
\Ve may employ any approved form of injector-burner apparatus such as is adapted for burning hydrocarbon fuel generally, and do not limit ourselves to the particular contrivance of burner herein shown.
The special advantage of this device is the simple and ready application it affords of a hydrocarbon-burner to the exterior of the f urnace without any fitting whatever, as against the common contrivance of fitting the apparatus in the furnace.
Instead of flexible pipes, the equivalent de- Vice of metallic pipes having swingjoints allowing the stand to be shifted may be employed.
The burner may be slung or suspended by chains or rods, instead of being mounted on a bench, if desired.
hat we claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a furnace, of the portable stand, the inclosing-case mounted on the stand and having a nozzle entering the furnace-door, the collar closing the space around the nozzle, the inj ectonb urner inclosed in said case, and the flexible pipes connecting the oil-feeder and steam-nozzle of the 5 burner with the boiler and oil-tank, respectively, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a furnace, of the portable and vertically-adj ustable stand, the inclosing case mounted on the stand and having the nozzle entering the fire-door, the collar closing the space around the nozzle, the
injector-burner inclosed in said case, and the flexible pipes connecting the oil-feeder and steam-nozzle of the burner With the boiler and. oil-tank, respectively, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a furnace, of the portable and Vertically-adjustable stand, the inclosing-case having the enlarged and perforated middle sect-ion and the nozzle entering the doorway, the collar closing the surrounding space, the injector-burner inclosed in said case, and the flexible pipes connecting the oil-feeder and steam-nozzle of the burner with the boiler and oil-tank, respectively, substantially as described.
Signed at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 12th day of April, A. D. 1888.
