' E. F. LANDIS.
CANDY TRAY.
No. 417,049. Patented Dec. 10, 1889.
FIG.2.
. VEN m fiTT E ST UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EZRA F. LANDIS, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MILTON HERSHEY, OF SAME PLACE.
TRAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,049, dated December 10, 1889.
Application filed March 14, 1889-.
To M6 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EZRA FLANDIS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Candy- Trays, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relatesto devices for packing and facilitating the transportation of candies, caramels, and like articles that are liable to adhere to each other, and thus become deformed during transportation; and the ob- I5 jects of my improvement are to provide a light but strong and inexpensive tray for the above purpose that will permit the circulation of air, if desired, all around the goods arranged thereon. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tray constructed in accordance with myinvention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of a box containing a series of said trays with blocks of candies or carainels packed thereon.
The tray consists of wires A, interwoven and twisted or otherwise uni-ted together to form meshes preferably longer in one direc- 0 tion than in the other, and the wires of these long meshes are kinked and doubled upward to form vertical closed loops or teats a, upon which the candies or caramels can be impaled or between which they can be retained in 3 5 proper position separated from each other with air circulating all around them. After each tray has been loaded with caramels or Serial No. 303,235- (No model.)
other goods 0 the trays can be placed one upon the other in a box D, as shown in Fig. 2, or each one can be loaded successively after 0 it has been placed within the box.
Although one of the objects in constructing the trays of wire is to permit full ventilation of the goods from under as well as from on top, yet said trays are adapted to receive sheets of paper or of pasteboard upon their loops to sustain special kinds of goods, if desired.
I am aware that candy boxes or trays have I been made of sheet metal, as tin, having projections stamped from it, and that they have also been made of pasteboard or of wood, with tacks projecting upward therethrough; but they do not permit as thorough ventilation as can be obtained by the present invention.
I am also aware that wire trays have been used for drying fruit and vegetables; but they do not present closed loops upwardly bent, as above set forth.
Havingnow fully described my invention, I claim- As an improved article of manufacture, a packing-tray for caramels and other articles, consisting of interwoven wires having kinks thereon in the form of closed loops doubled upward above the plane of the interlocked wires, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
EZRA F. LANDIS.
