(M0del.) r
A. LAMBERT. AUTOMATIC STEAM INJECTOR.
No. 416,702. Patented Dec; s, 1889.
WITNESSES therefrom.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT LAMBERT, O E WADSWVORTH, OHIO.
AUTOMATIC STEAM-INJ ECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,702, dated December 3, 1889.
Application filed September 12, 1888; Serial No. 285,222. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT LAMBERT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Wadsworth, in the county of Medina and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Automatic Steam- Injectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. I
forcing-jet is re-enforced by an auxiliary or supplementary jet; and to these ends the 111-:
vention comprises the combinations of parts, including their construction, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my injector. Fig. 2 is a detailed sectional View showing a modification of the main and auxiliary forcing-jet pipes and valves. I
In the embodiment of my invention I provide a body or shell A, and within this latter are disposed the lifting-tube a, the combining-tube l), and the delivery-tube c. The lifting and combining tubes at and b are provided with successively reduced tapered chambers, the flared end of the chamber I) being about the same area as the tapered end of the chamber a and slightly spaced apart The delivery-tube c is also provided with a tapered chamber, the reduced or tapered end of which is disposed just opposite and also slightly spaced apart from the tapered or reduced end of tube 17. The tubes a c are connected by suitable means (as, for instance, set-screws) to an internal shell B, suitably applied to the outer shell or body A. Midway of the shell B is applied the tube 1), as shown. Intermediately of the tubes at and b is a chamber (1, and similarly arranged with relation to tubes a and c is also a chamber e, designated the spilling-chamber. In alignment with the tubes aforesaid is arranged the main forcing-j et tube 0, and around the latter is the auxiliary or supplementary jet-tube C,
chambers with the suction or water pipe D, which is controlled by a valve f. The main forcing jet-tube C is controlled by a valve g,
communicating at the flared ends of their while the auxiliary or supplementary jet-tube C is controlled by a valve g,ib0th arranged in the steam-pipe E, the valve'g opening and closing a chamber 9 leading to the jet-tube O.
In the upper part of the body or shell A is the exhaust or overflow chamberF, communication between which and the chamber 01, intermediately of the tubes at and b, is had through an opening f the entrance to which is closed by a valve F. Communication is also had between the exhaust or overflow.
chamber F and the chamber eintermediately of the tubes 19 and 0 through the opening f in shell B. In this chamber F,-atits rear end, are the overflow-pipes F controlled by the check-valve F while in the shell or body A, also at its rear end, is a valve G, to prevent the entrance thereto of steam from the boiler.
A is a cylinder or butt, the outer or extreme rear end of which is adapted (being screw-threaded) for attachment to the boiler. This cylin'der or butt is applied to, or, rather,
unites with short tube or nozzle like sections,
as clearly seen in Fig. 1,to form the overflowpipe F above referred to. ner end of the butt or. cylinder A is screwed The extreme in-' to the body A and the upper section of the overflow pipe F and abuts against and is bolted to the rear flanged end of the deliverytube a.
In starting the injector the valve 9 opened, permitting the entrance of steam through the jet-tube C to the lifting-tube a. The steam then passes through the opening f past the valve F, into the exhaust or overflow chamber F, whence it escapes past the valve F into the overflow-pipe F. This action or passage of the steam produces a vacuum in the suction or water pipe D, which effects the lifting of the water thereinto and causes it to take the same course through the injector as that traversed by the steam. The
main forcing jet-tube g is now opened, which admits steam to the infiowing water, accelerating its flow and directing its passage up be tween the-tubes b 0, through the opening f and into the overflow or exhaust chamber F, whence it passes off or is discharged by means of the overflow-pipe F its valve F automatically lifting by the action or pressure of the water thereagainst. The pressure of the accelerated flow of water will finally become greater than the boiler-pressure, and thus unseat the valve G and seat the valve F when the whole flow of the water will be directed to and be caused to enter the boiler past the valve G, thereby effecting the supplying of the latter with feed-water. The flow of water having now become thoroughly established, a partial vacuum will be produced in j et-tube b, which will close the checkvalve F, thus wholly cutting off the overflow. Should, however, the flow of water be momentarily interrupted or withdrawn, it will be restored automatically, thus not requiring the continuous or exclusive attention of the attendant, as under ordinary circumstances the lifting of the water in the pipe D is effected by the jet of the main forcing-tube 0 independently of the jet of the auxiliary forcing-tube O. Theauxiliary forcing-tube O is especially of advantage when the suction or water pipe becomes overheated, as in that event it is impossible to lift the water by the jet of the tube 0 alone; also, by thus being enabled to re-enforee the jet of the main tube 0 it is possible to get up a flow of water, otherwise impossible when a low pressure of steam is "on, while when a high pressure of steam is on it is only necessary to cut off the jet from the tube 0, thus greatly enhancing the utility of the invention, being enabled to do double the service of the ordinary injector. In the modification disclosed in Fig. 2 the connection of the spindle or stem, together with its valve g, is effected through the yoke a and a screw-threaded connection between it and said stem or spindle, while one valve is dispensed with, the steam being admitted to the chamber g of the j et-tube 0 through the ports a a as said valve is moved sufiiciently outward to open said ports. The extension b of the valve g projects from the face of the latter sufficiently to exclude steam from the jet-tube 0, while steam may enter the ports a a whereby only the jet-tube C is in action'during the lifting of the water. After. this it is only necessary to move the valve farther away from its seat until the extension I) has been withdrawn from the chamber of the j et-tube C in order to put the jets of both tubes 0 (3 in operation.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The injector combining the main forcing jet-tube controlled by a valve, the auxiliary forcing jet-tube around the aforesaid j et-tube and controlled by a valve, the steam-ports for said jet-tubes, the lifting-tube, its flared end being opposite the main and auxiliary jettubes, the combining-tube'whose flared end is spaced away from and is about the same diameter as the opposite-smaller end of the lifting-tube, the delivery-tube having its tapered end spaced away from and about the same diameter as the opposite tapered end of the combining-tube, the valved overflowehamber communicating with the space-chamber between the lifting and combining tube and with the space or chamber between the combining and delivery tubes, and the overflow-pipe in the rear end of the overflowchamber, said overflow-pipe having a checkvalve, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT LAMBERT. Witnesses:
