ROLLING FORGE BARS No. 416,675. Patented-Dc, s. 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH GUEST, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
ROLLING FORGE-BARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,675, dated December 3, 1889.
Application filed May 13, 1889. Serial No. 310,577. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it'may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH GUEST, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State ing drawing, which forms part of this specification. I
My invention relates to an improved method of rolling forge-bars; and it consists in taking the ball as it comes from either the squeezer or the hammer and passing it a suitable number of times between horizontal and vertical rolls, turning the pieceonequarter round, and passing it through sidewise as often as may be necessary to keep the piece nearly square, the vertical rolls acting to square up the ends and edges, while the horizontal rolls act to reduce in thickness and spread the metal out until the piece is of nearly even density throughout, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to so treat the ingot or puddle-ball that both its ends and sides will be square and true, and thus make a forge-bar, from a number of which a pile may be made, from which plate or skelp iron can be rolled in ordinary grooved rolls without the usual excessive loss in shearing, the edges of these forge-bars being so good that the metal in the finished plate will be sound and good clear up tothe edges.
The accompanying drawing represents a side elevation of a mill for rolling the forgebars.
A A represent a pair of horizontal rolls, and B B a pair of vertical rolls placed in any desired relation thereto, and which vertical rolls are laterally adjustable according to the width and length of the forge-bars which are being made, the horizontal rolls also being adjustable in the usual manner.
In carrying my process into execution I take the puddle-ball or ingot directly from the squeezer orhammer and pass it between 5 the horizontal rolls A A a suitable number of times until its length has become slightly greater than the width it is to have as a finished forge-bar. I then turn the piece of metal one-quarter around and again pass it between the rolls A A, which increases the length of the piece somewhat at the same time that the vertical rolls B B roll itsedges and decrease its width. The bar thus formed is passed again and again through the two sets of rolls A A B B, turning it as often as the piece becomes longer than the distance between the vertical rolls, until both its ends and its edges are trued up, the thickness of the bar being decreased by the horizontal rolls only sufficiently to fill out the corners and make the bar of the required size. This thickness will vary with the weight of the metal in the puddle-ball or ingot, so that while notwo of the forge-bars will be of exactly the same thickness, they will have their edgesand ends trued up alike and be of the same size. A number of the forge-bars may then be piled one upon the other and passed through rolls of ordinary construction, so as to be manufactured into any desired form.
I-Ieretofore in the manufacture of forgebars the metal has been passed again and again through the rolls, and very ragged ends and edges have been the result, the iron being rolled to a regulated thickness. cases the rolls have been provided with grooves which true the edges of the bar; but these grooves do not trim the ends and the width of the bars is very limited, seldom over fifteen inches. By the process here described, however, the sides and edges. are worked upon at the same time that the bar is being reduced in thickness. As the bar is not elongated to any great extent, the passes through the rolls are very short, and thus a vast amount of time and labor is savedin forming the bar, while the size of the bar is only limited by the length of the horizontal rolls. The thickness depends entirely upon the weight of metal in the ingot or puddleball. I
.Having thus described my invention, I claim The process herein described of rolling In some forge-bars, consisting in passing a puddle-ball In testimony'whereof I affix my signature in or ingot between horizontal and vertical rolls, presence of two Witnesses. turning the piece one-quarter round as often as it maybe necessary to keep its length and JOSEPH GUEST. 5 breadth nearly equal, the horizontal rolls actlVitnesses:
ing' to reduce the thickness, While the vertical H. H. SALLADE,
rolls act to square up and finish the edges, F. E. YOUNGS. substantially as described. I
