SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,985, dated vApril 8, 1890.

Be it known that I, XVILLIAM G. HOWELL, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oombined Cold-Rolling and Polishing Machines; and I do here by declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in a combined rolling and polishing machine; and it consists in the combination of two sets of rolls which revolve in the same direction, while the third set of rolls revolve in the opposite direction and polish the shaft or rod which is passing through between all three sets of rolls, the two outer sets of rolls being made to reduce the shaft or rod, while the central set of rolls merely polish it, as will be more fully described hereinafter. v
The object of my invention is to produce a machine which will not only compress or reduce the rod or shaft, but polish it at the same time, so that a highly-finished rod or shaft may be produced at a very slight cost.
The accompanying drawing represents a vertical section of a machine which embodies my invention.
A B O represent three pairs of grooved rolls, which may either be of the same or different diameters and which may either run at the same rate of speed; or the central pair of rolls B, which do the polishing, may be made torun either more rapidly or more slowly than the other rolls, as may be preferred. I do not limit myself either to rolls having but a single groove or pass through them, nor to any particular size of the rolls, nor the speed at which any one or all of the pairs of the rolls are run. The pair of rolls A reduce in size the rod or shaft which is being passed between them by cold-rolling, while the rolls B revolve in the opposite direction and polish the surface of the rod or roll which is being passed betweenv them. These rolls are simply plain rolls, made of cast or chilled iron. It is not necessary to coat the surface of this roll with any abradthis to be entirely unnecessary, for the smooth surfaces of the rolls B answer every purpose.
The third set of rolls O, which revolve in the same directions as the one A, still further reduces the rod, pipe, or shaft, and then the rod, pipe, or shaft is given a partial turn and again sent through the rolls, so as to polish and true its surface. The rod, shaft, or pipe may be passed through between the rolls any desired number of times, either through the same groove or pass or through other smaller grooves or passes, just as maybe desired.
This machine is also adapted for rolling and polishing hot as well as cold pipes, rods, and shafts, and pieces or sections of metal of any kind which can be rolled.
By means of the three set-s of rolls here shown a complete cold-rolling and polishing machine is produced, and by means of which pipes, rods, shafts, and other articles can be cold-rolled and polished at the same time at a Very slight expense. The use of smooth rolls for polishing have never heretofore been used in this connection, and by their use a great saving in expense is effected over the usual methods of turning or cold-rollin g without polishing at the same time.
I am the first one who has combined a coldrolling and polishing machine in one continuous operation, and the iirst to polish. by means of smooth rolls rods or shafts which are undergoing the process of being reduced.
In case hot-rolling and polishing is to be done, I use another machine which is the counterpart of the one here shown, and through which the hot material is passed, and then the product of that machine is taken and passed through the one here shown, so that the article is practically cold-rolled and polished at the same time.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-- 1.
