Description

(No Model.)
U. GIBEAULT. HUB FOR WHEELS.
No. 416,361. Patented Deo.'3, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
v ULDARIQUE GIBEAULT, OF ST. ISIDORE, QUEBEC, CANADA.
7 HUB FOR WHEELS.
SIECIFIGATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,361, dated December 3, 1889.
Application filed June 22, 1889.
To all whom it 11mg concern:
Be it known that I, ULDARIQUE GIBEAULT, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at St. Isidore, in the county of Laprairie and Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hubs for Wheels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v
My invention has reference to that class of hubs in which the spokes are inserted into them alternately from one side to the other that is, the spokes forming a Vand has for its object the replacing of these spokes without undoing-the wheel, and also binding it at will.
Referring to the drawings, similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several,
views.
Figure 1 shows a view of myinvention, one half in plan and the other half in section; Fig. 2, an elevation shown part in section, and Fig. 3 an elevation of a complete wheel.
As can be seen in Fig. 1, my hub consists of two parts A and B, and can be made out of any suitable material, and its form can be altered to suit. However, the portions C can be made out of wood, and the bands D, as well as the flanges E and F, out of metal; also the boxes G and H. The flanges E are made, as shown in Fig. 1, lapping'over the portion 0 at I, while the flanges F can be made, as shown in Fig. 1, or lapping over the piece 0, as shown at J in dotted lines. Any suitable moldings can be put on these flanges E and F.
The tapering box G is inserted into the portion B of my hub, and is used to strengthen this portion 13, for the journal of the axle is inserted only in the tapering box H, which is inserted and firmly secured to the portion A, it extending out at K of a length equal to the width of the portion B. The two parts A and B are provided with the slots L for the insertion of one end of the spokes. The plates E and F in both portions A and B are Serial No. 315,216. (No model.)
firmly secured by means of the bolts M,while the two portions A and B are secured and drawn up by means of the bolts N, the end 0 passing into the portion P of the flange F.
Now let us suppose it is necessary to replace a spoke. All that is necessary to do is to take off the nuts Q (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1) and pull the two portions A andB apart, so that they will occupy the position shown in Fig. 1, this taking all the rigidity out of the wheelthat is, unbinding it. Then taking off the nuts M and removing the flange E on any portion A or B that the desired spoke is in and taking hold of it at R and pulling its end S out of the slot L, at the same time taking its other end U out of the rim V, extracts the spoke, and the reversing of these operations puts one in. Any desired degree of stiffness may be imparted to the wheel simply by screwing up the nuts Q.
As can be seen, my invention is of great service in saving time not only in replacing spokes, but also in binding the rim, as well as setting wheels together when new.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a wheel, the combination, with the halfhub A, provided with spoke-sockets, the recess P, and the removable flange E for securing the spokes, of the axle-box secured into said half-hub and projecting therefrom, the second half-hub B, having the end 0 adapted to enter the recess P, the spoke-sockets, and the removable flange E for securing the spokes, the strengthening-box inserted in half-hub B and sliding over the projecting end of the axle-box, and the bolts for coup-' ling the two half-hubs together, substantially as andfor the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ULDARIQUE' GIBEAULT.
