Description

(No Model.)
H. C. WEEDEN. METHOD 0F AUTOMATIGALLY PLUSHING BY ELECTRICITY.
No. 416,138. Patented Nov. 26,1889
WITNEEEE'E.
. charge-valve governing the disch arge of water UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY C. \VEEDEN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE IVEEDEN SANITARY MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OFRHODE ISLAND.
METHOD OF AUTOMATICALLY FLUSHING BY ELECTRICITY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,1-38, dated November 26, 1889.
Application tiled March 18, 1889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. IVEEDEN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Automatically Flushing by Electricity, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the production of a discharge of iiusliingwater from a suitable tank having an electrically-operated disfrom the said tank or receptacle; and its object is to effect this discharge by means of the liquid poured into the bowl to be iiushed when the same is used.
My invention is particularly applicable to that class of bowls--such as nrinals and slophoppers-in which it is desirable that flushing shall take place automatically and as soon as the bowl is used.
In the accompanying drawing I have represented one form of apparatus by means of which my improved method may be carried out. It is to be understood, however, that, as will hereinafter appear, my improved method is independent of any specific form of apparatus, and is capable of being carried out by other forms of apparatus than that shown 5 also, that I make 11o-claim herein to any apparatus.
In the drawing I have shown at A a flushing-tank of ordinary construction, the discharge-valve E of which regulates the outliow of liquid through the iiushing-pipe F to the bowl G to be flushed. The discharge-valve E is connected to an operating -lever B, which carries an armature C, which armature lies within the field of an electroniagnet I). Such a device as thus far described is a wellknown one for the purpose, and has heretofore been operated by means of a push-button or other suitable circuit maker or breaker adapted to be operated by the person using the bowl. Inasmuch as the working of such a push-button may depend entirely upon the volition of the person using the bowl, it is obvious that its use will frequently be omitted Serial No. 303,758. (No model.)
either intentionally or unintentionally. By my improved method, however, I no longer rely directly upon any act of1 human volition, but employ the uid introduced into the bowl as a necessary agent and inevitable cause of the production of the iiushing action. To do this I employ the fluid intro duced into the bowl when in use and passing through or out of the same to effect the elec* trical energizing of the electro-magnet and thus operate the flushing-valve. This may be conveniently done by locating the terminal at a point within the outward path of the iiuid passing from the bowl, so that the iiuid as it passes out shall make (or it may be break) the circuit to operate the valve. Itis obvious, however, that the method indicated may be followed out with many different forms of apparatus widely differing from each other as well as from the specific form shown.
I am aware that manuallyproducing the operation of a lushingvalve by electricity is old. Iam not aware, however, that any one before myself has employed the iiuid introduced into the bowl when in use as a snbsti tute for manual energy.
I make no claim here to the apparatus herein shown, as it is the subject-matter of an application for patent which I have Afiled, Serial No. 300,528.
The method of automatically flushing a bowl by liquid normally coniined above the same, which consists in pouring other liquid into the bowl and causing the liquid so poured in to make or break an electric circuit controlling a valve, by the movement of which the iirst-named body of liquid is released from coninement and permitted to descend into the bowl to iiush it.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 13th day of March, A. D. 1889.
HENRY C. IVEEDEN.
