UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
MARTIN N. COE, OF ASHLAND, VISCONSIN.
WATCH-CASE PLIERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,960, dated November 26, 1889.
Application filed June 6, 1889.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARTIN N. COE, of Ashland, in the county of Ashland, and in the State of XVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pliers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to pliers designed for use in the repair of watch-eases that are sprung out of shape or spread so that the ange does not hold its seat rmly; also for removing dents in such cases. Said invention therefore consists in certainpeculiarities of construction to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a side elevation of a pair of pliers constructed aecording to my invention; Fig. 2, an edge view of the same; Fig. 3, a detail view showing the pliers as employed for removing a dent from a watch-case, and Fig. 4 a similar view showing said pliers as employed for restoring a sprung section of a watch-case to its normal shape.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A B represent the members of my pliers united by a pivot C. rl'he jaws u, b of the members A B have their opposing extremities struck on a circle, as best illustrated in Fig. 2, to conform with the circular contourof a watch: case section D. The inner face c yof the jaw (t is concave to conform to the convex oval portion d on. the exterior of the watch-case section D, and the outer-face e of the jaw h is convex to conform to the interior of this oval portion of said Watch-case, the latter face being overlapped'by the end of jaw a and of such curve as to extend beyond the same.-
\Vhen the pliers are employed to shape a sprung section of a Watchcase jaw, the jaw b is placed so that its convex portion will come against theinside of the watch-oase section to act as a support for the latter, and the jaw a is closed against the outside of said case-section to strike the .iiange f of thesame, as shown in Serial No,3l3,334. (No model.)
Fig. 4. By a slight pressure on the members A B their jaws a b close tight on the watchoase-section, and the ange j' of the latter is turned in by the jaw a, while the adjacent portion of said case-section is supported in shape by the convex outer face e of jaw l). lBy followingaround the watch-case section' and repeating the operation just described said casesection is restored to its original shape and thus made to close tight.
To remove a dent in the watch-case section, the jaw b is placed so as to have its convex face c under the dent, and the jaw a comes against the opposite side of said case-section, as 4illustrated in Fig. Now, by closing the jaws firmly toward each other and drawing them toward J[he flange f of the case-section the dent will be raised by the jaw b against the concave face c of the jaw ce, thereby completing the operation wit-hout marring said case-section- Pliers constructed as above described are capable of reaching any part of the watchcase section on either side of its liingejoint, and consequently the section can be restored to its proper shape without removal.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In pliers for use on watch-cases, the jaws having their opposing extremities struck on a circle, the jaw a, provided with the concave inner face c, and the jaw b, provided with the convex outer face e, the latter face such curve as to extend beyond the same, substant-ially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of Tisonnsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN N. COE.
