Be it known that I, GRATTAN Il. WHEELER, of Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and Terri-V tory of lVashington, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shipping or other Books, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention mainly relates to shipping receipt-books; and it consists in a novel construction of the same, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims, and whereby the shipping-book lnay be made much shorter than usual, and the leaves or receipts, which are separately bound together and providedfor making a number of accurate copies by means of suitable carbon-paper interposed between them, are readily and securelybou nd to their places in the cover, free from any liability to become disarranged or accidentally detached, with facility for detaching the receipts as required.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l represents a View in perspective of a shipping-book embodying my invention, showing one of the sides of the cover as thrown back or open; Fig. 2, a side .view of the book closed, with a portion broken away to show construction. Fig. 3 is a section of the book, in part, upon the line es at in Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow w; and Fig. 4 is a further section of the book, in part, upon the line y y in Fig. 3, looking in the direction ofthe arrow z.

The receipts or leaves a c of the book have .each a row of perforations b near their lefthand side to provide for detachment of the sheets as filled in or used and to leave a stub or blank portion to the left of said perforations. Said leaves are laid directly one over the other to the number desired in the book. Three holes c c c are then punched through the stub or blank portions of the leaves, said holes being arranged at suitable distances apart, one below the other. A small line or other cord d is tillen suitably interlaced through these several holes in the leaves, which register with each other, and suitably tied to hold the several leaves together inde pendent of the cover of the book,within which the leaves thus bound are afterward secured by independent cords, as will be hereinafter described.

The cover of the book is composed of opposite fiat stiff portions B B and soft or flexible strips or portions e e on both sides of the cover and extended or bent to form a flexible back f, with stiffening-strips g g inserted wit-hin the portions e e between the portions E B and the back f to give rmness to the cover and prevent sagging, while the flexible portions e e of the cover admit of the stiff or main portions B B of the sides easily opening and closing at the junction with them of the portions e e without straining on the back.

Two holes h h, which may be tted with eye lets, are punched in each of the flexible portions c e of the cover and arranged so that they will register with the upper and lower holes c c in the bound leaves of the book. Through these holes 7L 7L and@ c, I pass or interlace two independent cords C C from opposides of the book, and securely fasten or tie the ends of said cords on the outsides of the cover, thus holding the bound leaves to their places in the cover and utilizing for this purpose the same holes as were used for binding or tying the leaves together.

A snap-hook D is attached to the back of the book at its top bya small narrow strip of leather 7c, secured to the back f by a rivet t' or otherwise, the same forming a ready means for draymen whereby to carry the book.

The book may be made much shorter, and need not be more than one-half or onethird the length of the usual shipping-books, a series of duplicates, as necessary in shipping-receipts, being made by laying a piece of suitable carbon-paper with its black side next to the adjacent leaf or sheet, and so on, for two -or more succeeding adjacent sheets, to make as many duplicates as may be required-as, for instance, an original and three or more copiesmby a single writing, thereby saving much time to the shipper and the copies necessarily being exact counterparts of the original.

The several leaves being separately tied or IOO bound together and then the Whole separately tied or boundto thecover, the bound leaves can only be removed by cutting the strings, excepting by separating them as required in the lines of the perforations b, the cords afterward being cut to detach the stubs, when it is necessary to insert and permanently'bind again a new bound collection of leaves in the cover. v
