SPARK-CONDUCTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,831, dated November 26, 1889. Application filed August 30, 1889. Serial No. 322,392. (No model.)

Be it known th at I, KENT IICARPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem,
in the county of Roanoke and State of VIP-i ginia, have invented a newand useful Spark-. Conductor, of which the following isa speci-,
.1889, Serial No. 307,996, and allowed August 15, 1889.
The object of the present invention is to control the smoke and gases after they have left the flue and passed through the foraminous portion in the top thereof and have been separated from the sparks and cinders, and to convey them beneath the cars or to some other convenient point, whereby they will be prevented entering the car-windows.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a spark-conductor provided with a hood or covering constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal sectional view. Fig.3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 00 a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar View taken on line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a modification of the invention, showing a construction particularly designed for passenger-trains. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the construction shown in Fig. 5.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by letter, A designates the flue of a sparkconductor, extending along the top of a locomotive and terminating in a spark-receptacle at the rear of the tender, andconstructed in accordance with the specification of the application for patent above referred to. The section A of the flue A has secured to it a portion B of an approximately semi-cylindrical hood or casing B, which is situated over the foraminous portion a of the section A to re ceive the smoke and gases after they have passed through the foraminous portion and i have been separated from the cinders and sparks, and to convey them rearward into the other section B of the hood or casing B, which section B preferably extends along the flue A of the spark-conductor and. terminates in a depending tube or pipe B that extends through the spark-receptacle A to a suitable point below the same where the smoke and gases are discharged, and are carried away by the under-currents caused by the passage of the train.
The semi-cylindrical hood or casing, which forms a separate way for the sparks and cinders and other solid matter of the products of combustion, is riveted or similarly secured to the sides of the flue, and the section B hasa slightly-flarin g mouth and is situated slightly in advance of the foraminous portion a of the section A. The rear end of the section A of the hood and the section or portion B of the hood or casing enter and project; a suitable distance in the flaring mouth 0, formed by the forward ends of the section A of the flue and the section or portion B of the semicylindrical hood or casing, and the upper portion a of the section A of the flue is slightly flared and projects beyond and over the upper portion of the rear end of the section A of the flue and separates the passage for the sparks from that of the smoke and gases at the junction of the two sections.
In Figs. 5 and 6 of the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a modification of the invention which is particularly designed to be employed upon passenger-trains when it is desired to convey the smoke and gases to the rear of the train instead of depositing them, as heretofore described, beneath the tender of the engine. In this construction the depending tube or pipe B and the portion 13 of the semi-cylindrical hood or casing, which extends along the depending portion of the flue, is omitted, and a pipe or flue D, which extends along the top of the cars and is provided with suitable flexible connections, is secured to the rear end of the section B of the hood or casing, the lower portion of the front end of the pipe or flue D being cut away to conform to the configuration of the fine A and to make a neat connection between the pipe and the hood or casing.
The smoke and gases leave the flue A through the foraminous portion a and a as described in my former application above referred to, and are received by the hood or casing, and are thereby controlled and are carried away and deposited at a suitable point and prevented entering the car-Windows,
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings the construction, operation and advantages of the invention will readily be seen, and I desire it to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise details of construction herein shown and described, as I may, without departing from the spirit of the invention, make various minor changes therein.
What I claim is 1. The combination, in a spark-con ductor, of a flue provided with a foraminous portion for the discharge of smoke and gases, and a hood or casing extending along the flue and adapted to receive said smoke and gases, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, in the spark-conductor, of a flue having a foraminous portion for the discharge of smoke andgases, and a hood or casing extending along the flue and adapted to receive the smoke and gases, and terminating in a pipe or tube, whereby the smoke and gases may be carried to a convenient pointfor discharge, substantially as described.
3. In a spark-conductor, the combination of the flue provided with a foraminous portion, and a semi-cylindrical hood or casing arranged above the foraminous portion and extending along the flue and terminating in 4. The combination, in a spark-conductor,
of a section A of the flue provided with a foraminous portion, the portion B of the semi-cylindrical hood or casing arranged above the foraminous portion and having its front ends slightly flared, the section A of the flue, and the portion B of the semi-cylindrical hood or casing, the section A of the flue and the portion B of the hood or casing having their front ends flared and adapted to receive the rear ends of the section A of the flue and the portion B of the hood or casing, substantially as and for the purpose described.
