A suitable valve 26 is located in the pipe 2% whereby the supply of steam to the pipes 1.0 may be controlled and regulated. By opening this valve, it will be understood that jets of steam under high pressure are delivered. into the respective pipes 10 so as to drive the smoke rearwardly through said pipes and into the fire box.
From the foregoing description, it is be lieved that the construction, manner of operation and several advantages of our in vention will be clearly and fully understood. The smoke and products of combustion entering the forward ends of the smoke pipes, is carried by the air draft and steam which is admitted to said pipes and forcibly delivered into the fire boX over the fuel bed, whereby it is consumed. It will be understood that the damper plate 12 is only disposed in its fully closed position when the fire box is fed with fresh fuel, and said plate is opened at intervals to permit the unconsluned products of combustion to pass off through the stack 9 to the atmosphere. By dampening the gas and smoke, its combus tion upon delivery to the fire box is assured. By the provision. of such a smoke consumer, the emission of smoke and sparks from the stack of the locomotive is greatly lessened of conflagrations, due to live cinders falling along the track,

The combination with a locomotive boiler furnace having a smoke coilecting chamber provided with a stack and a tire box, of spaced longitudinally extending pipes connected at one of their ends to said stack and having their other into the fire box, a damper plate mounted withinthe stack, means for 'iositioning said damper plate to direct the products of combustion into said pipes, an air flue communicating with said pipes intermediate of their ends, a plate pivotaliy mounted upon said flue, means for positioning said plate to forcibly direct an air draft downwardly through the due and into said pipes, a steam supply pipe conneied to the boiler and ex tending into said fine, and branch pipes extending from the steam supply pipe into the respective smoke conducting pipes and having their extremities extended longitudinally into said pipes.
