ARMATURE FOR ELECTRIC MACHINES.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WARREN S. BELDING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Englewood, in the county of Cook and State of 5 Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Armatures for Electric Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference-marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. 5 This invention relates particularly to novel features in sectional armatures.
My improved armature consists of a ring or hollow cylinder divided into two sections in a plane'extending through the length of its axis. The two sections are to be wound separately with coils of wire and then united at their meeting ends.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 is an end elevation of the armature-ring before 2 5 it is wound. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same ring mounted on spiders and a central shaft whereon the armature is to rotate, the winding/being represented upon said ring in diagram. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the armature-ring with the spiders and shaft applied thereto.

The outer portion of each edge of the section A meeting the section A is extended into a portion of the space which the section A would occupy were it a complete half-rin g,
the outer portion of said edges of the section A being cut away for this purpose. The
corresponding inner edges of the section A are extended over the inner portion of said edges of the section A. Thus two tongues B B are formed on the section A, each lying over the side of a corresponding tongue B 'joined.
on the, section A. hen thus combined, the two sections are held by said tongues against movement from each other in a direction at right angles to the axis of the ring and in a plane cutting said tongues and said axis; but it is necessary to provide means for holding said sections against separating by moving in a direction at right angles to the axis and in a plane cutting the middle of each section and the length of the axis. This I accomplish by forming a suitable channel in the meeting face of each tongue B and B, such channels being so placed as to stand opposite each other when the sections are united and form a continuous passage through the ring parallel to the axis thereof. The channels formed in the tongues B are designated by the letter Z), and the channels formed in the tongues B are designated by the letter I). A key 0 is 110w fitted into each passage formed by the channels I) and Z), whereby the two sections are firmly locked together. Said channels and said key may be of any suitable form. The drawings show them of ,cylindric form, but they may also be polygonal. W'Vhen said keys are metallic, they are preferablyinsulated from the metal of the sections A and A. Said keys may be extended at their ends and threaded to receive the spiders D and nuts D to bind said spiders to said ring. Additional bolts 0 may extend through the ring between the joints formed by the tongues B and B, said bolts also extending through the spiders D and receiving at their ends nuts D 8 to bind said spiders to said ring.
E is a shaft extending through the center of each spider, and the armature is to rotate upon said shaft.
F is the wire, coiled in any desired manner 0 upon the sections A and A before they are I claim as my invention- 1. In an armature for electric machines, the ring composed of the section A, having the outer tongues B B, provided with channels I), and the section A, provided with the inner tongues B, extending over the tonguesB and provided with channels I) opposite the channels b, and keys 0, extending through the loo passage formed by the channels I) and 12, substantially as shown and described.
2. In an armature for electric machines, the ring composed of the section A, having the outer tongues B B, provided with channels b, and the section A, provided with the inner tongues B, extending over the tongues B and. provided with channels I) opposite the channels b, and keys extending through the passage formed by the channels I) and b, the ends of said keys being extended and threaded and a spider or spiders being applied over said ends, and nuts being applied to said ends to bind said spider or spiders to said ring, substantially as shown and described.
3. In an armature for electric machines, the ring composed of the section A, having the outer tongues B B, provided with channels I), and the section A, provided with the inner tongues B extending over the tongues B and provided with channels I) opposite the channels b, and keys extending through the passage formed by the channels I) and l), the ends of said keys being extended and threaded, and a spider or spiders extended over said ends, and nuts being applied to said ends to bind said spider or spiders to said ring, and bolts extending through said ring and spider or spiders intermediate to the keys 0, and nuts being applied to said bolts to bind said spider or spiders to said ring, substantially as shown and described.

In an armature for electric machines, the ring composed of the section A, consisting of metallic plates and having the outer tongues B B, provided with channels I), and the section A, consisting of metallic plates and provided with the inner tongues B, extending over the tongues B and provided with channels b opposite the channels I), and keys 0 extendingth rough the passage formed by the channels Z2 and 11, substantially as shown and described.
5. In an armature for electric machines, the ring composed of the section A, consisting of metallic plates and having the outer tongues B B, provided with channels I), and the section A, consisting of metallic plates and provided With the inner tongues B, extending over the tongues B and provided with channels b opposite 'the channels I), .and. keys extending through the passage formed by the channels I) and b, the ends of said keys being extended and threaded, and a spider or spiders being applied over said ends, and nuts being applied to said ends to bind said spider or spiders to said ring, substantially as shown and described.
6. In an armature for electric machines, the ring composed of the section A, consisting of metallic plates and having the outer tongues B B, provided with channels I), and the section A, consisting of metallic plates and provided with the inner tongues B, extending over the tongues B and provided with channels b opposite the channels I), and keys extending. through the passage/formed by the channels I) and b, the ends of said keys being extended and threaded, and a spider or spiders extended over said ends, and nuts being applied to said ends to bind said spider or spiders to said ring, and bolts extending through said ring and spider or spiders intermediate to the keys C, and nuts being apj'plied to said bolts to bind said spider or spiders to said ring, substantially as shown 5 and described.
