UNITED STATES PATENT OEFIcE.
JAMES CIIRISTY GENTRY, OF MONROE CITY, MISSOURI.
IMPLEMENT F OR HOLDING SICKLE-BARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,712, dated November 26, 1889.
Application filed August 10, 1889. Serial No. 320,402. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES CHEIs'rY GEN- TRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monroe City, in the county of Monroe and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Implement for HoldingSickle-Bars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to an implement to be used in holding sickle-bars during the operation of sharpening the teeth of the same, and among the objects in view are to provide a simply and cheaply constructed hand device adapted to grip the sickle-bar and hold the same at a desired angle during the operation of grinding the teeth or blades thereof.
ith these general objects in view the invention consists in a handle the forward end of which terminates in a rigid plate having a set-screw, and in rear of the plate in a'central transverse bearing-shoulder and opposite inclined similar shoulders, and, furthermore, in an adjustable clamping-plate and set-screw designed to cooperate with the rigid plate and thus grip a sickle-bar in a manner adapted to present any of the angular or transverse surfaces of the knives'of the same in a proper manner to the grindstone.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective ot' a device constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a plan of the same in position upon the sickle-bar, the three posit-ions being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the movable clamping-plate; Fig. 4, a detail in plan of the device, the movable clamping-plate being detached' Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section taken centrally through Fig. 1, but showin g the sickle-bar in place.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In practicing my invention, for the purpose of economy and facility in manufacturing the same, I prefer to cast the handle, rigid clamping jaw or plate, and shoulders in a single piece or casting, but do not limit my invention to such a construction.
1 represents the handle, of a convenient size and shape to be gripped by the hand of the operator, and the same merges into an enlarged head 2. One transverse half of the head is removed and the remainder forms a rigid clamping-plate 3, and is provided with a threaded opening a, in which is mounted a set-screw 5. The end or shoulderof the head is provided with a central bearing-surface G at a direct right angle to the longitudinal length of the device, and at each side in rear- \vardly-inclined bearing faces or shoulders S. A threaded opening 9 is made through the head, and upon the head and over the opening is mounted an L-shaped clamping-plate 10, the L end terminating over the rigid clamping-plate, or, in other words, occurring at the extremity of the device, and the shank of the plate being longitudinally slotted, as at 11, and registering with the threaded perforation in the head,'and adjustable thereover by means of a thumb-screw 12, the threaded end of which terminates in the threaded opening in the head after passing through the slot in the L-shaped plate.
13 represents the sickle-bar of ordinary construction, and 14 the cutters or knives.
The manner of using my invention when it is desired to grind the knives is as follows: The L-shaped plate is first adjusted to a position with relation to the shoulders to adapt the insertion of the sickle-bar between its L end and anyone of its shoulders or bearingfaces, as it is well known that the various makes of sickle-bars vary in proportions.
Having adjusted the device for the width of the sickle-bar, it now simply becomes necessary to adjust the device to the thickness.
This is done by operatingthe thumb-screw in the rigid clamping-plate.
It is apparent that the handle may be swung from right to left, or vice versa, to assume the different positions shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and in this mannerpresent the oppositely disposed angular edges of the knives in a convenient and proper manner to the grindstone, the adjustment to the right or left merely requiring a loosening and resetting of the thumb -screw in the rigid clamp, and also, if desired, in the similar operation of the thumb-screw and the L-shaped clamp, said L-shaped clamp being swung to right or left, so that its L end embraces and rigidly retains the cutter-bar.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. A hand device of the characterdescribed,
comprising a head having a shoulder and extended beyond the same to form a clampingplate, and an L-shaped plate adj ustably mounted on the head and having its L end occurring opposite the first-mentioned plate, substantially as specified.
2. A device of the class described provided with a head terminating in a shoulder, a laterally and longitudinally adjustable clamping-arm mounted on the head in rear of the shoulder, and an opposite rigid clamping-arm extended beyond the shoulder, and set-screws mounted in each arm, substantially as specified.
3. A device of the class described terminating in a rigid clamping-arm, and an adjustable clamping-arm, and intermediate oppositely-inclined bearingshoulders, substantially as specified.
4. The herein-described sickle-bar holder, consisting of a handle having a thickened head terminating in oppositely-inclined and intermediate bearing-shoulders and extended beyond the same to form a perforated rigid clamping arm or plate, and provided with a set-screw and an L-shaped slotted adjustable clamping-plate mounted at the opposite side of the head, and a set-screw passing through the slot and terminating in threaded openi n in the head, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES CHRISTY GENTRY.
