SAND-REEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,076, dated November 12, 1889.
Application filed March 9, 1889. Serial No. 302,642. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DEXTER J. THAYER, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sand-Reels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable. others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to animprovement in sand-reels.
The object is to provide reliable and powerful mechanism for winding and unwinding the cables attached to the bailers or sandpumps of oil and gas Wells and for starting or stopping these cables at-a moments notice;
and with this end in view my invention consists in combinations of mechanism hereinafter described, and embodied in the claims. The accompanying drawingis aviewin perspective of my improved sandreel and connected mechanism.
A represents a derrick, B the fioor of the derrick, and O a frame located at one side of the derrick. The reel is journaled at its ends in the frame 0 and the beam 1 extending out from the floor. This reel consists of the shaft 2 and the drums 3 and 4 thereon. One of these drums 3 has a grooved periphery to receive the drive belt or rope 5, and also a brake-drum 6,- integral therewith or in proximity thereto. A large band-wheel 7 is journaled at one end of the frame, and the belt 5, passing over the periphery of drum 3, is crossed at point 8 and passed over wheel 7, which latter is driven by an engine (not shown) or other motive power. A standard 9 is pivotedon the frame about midway between the drum 3 and the band-wheel 7,and this standard is provided with slots 10, through which the belt 5 passes, and in these slots a pair of pulleys 11 are placed, and on them the pressure of the belt 5 is exerted under certain conditions. Hand-lever 12 is pivoted on the derrick-floor or in other convenient position to be easily reached and handled, and from this lever a connecting-bar 13 extends to the upper end of standard 9. This connecting-bar is pivoted both to the hand-lever and the standard but from the lowerend of the former a band-brake 1i, integral or otherwise rigidly connected with the lever, extends forward in proximity to the brake-drum 6. The sandline 15 is secured to the drum 3, and passing around the shaft 2 extends upward over pulleys 16 and 17. in the derrick, and thence downward through the hole 18 in the floor into the Well.
It will be noticed, as it is shown in the drawing, that the standard 9 with its pulleys acts as a belt-tightener, and when forced for- Ward, by forcing the belt apart, or, in other words, out of its most direct line, the belt is tightened on the drum and belt-wheel so as not to slip on either, but to communicate positive motion from the latter to the former; also, it will be noticed that the same motion which vibrates the standard 9 forward at the same time throws the brake 14 out of engagement with drum 6. This is the adjustment when the reel is set in motion. To stop the reel, though, the hand-lever 12 is pushed backward, moving with it the standard 9, until the pulleys 11 therein are no longer in contact with the belt 5, the latter runningloos'e in the slots 10,
and the brake 14 is simultaneously thrown in engagement with the drum 6. As the reel is turned, the line 15is wound upon or unwound from it.
Besides the arrangement shown and described, the reel might be made toslide forward in order to tighten the belt, and it is evident that other slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing f rom'the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself to the particular construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
.1. The combination, with a reel having brake and driving drums thereon, a beltwheel, and a belt for communicating motion from the belt-Wheel to the driving-drum, of a belt-tightener pivoted at one end to a support and provided with bearings for each strand of the belt, a pivoted hand-lever, a brake connected to the hand-lever on one side of the fulcrum thereof, and a rod connected to the hand-lever on the opposite side of said fulcrnm and to the free end of the belt-tightener, whereby when the hand-lever is moved in one direction the brakeis released and the belt tightened, and when moved in the opposite direction the brake is set and the tension on the belt released, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a reel having brake and driving drums thereon, a beltwheel, and a belt for communicating motion from the belt-wheel to the driVi11g-drun1,of a belt-tighteuerpivoted at one end and having openings receiving-and affording bearings for the belt, a hand-lever, a brake-band secured to the lever 011 one side of its fulcrum, and a rod secured to the lever on the opposite side of its fulcrum and connected to the free end of the belt-tightener, substantially as set forth.
The combination, with a reel having brake and driving drums thereon, a beltwheel, and a belt for comm unicating motion from the belt-Wheel to the driving-drum, of a belt-tightener pivoted at one end and provided with two rollers-one bearing on each strand of the belta han d-lever, a brake-ban d secured to the lever on one side of its fulcrum, and a rod secured to the lever on the opposite side of its fulcrum and connected to the free end of the bclt-tightener, substantially as set forth.
