Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LAWRENCE WESLEY HORNE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, and
' WARREN NOBLE CRANE, a citizen of the United States, andresident of the borough and county of Bronx, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Operated Car- Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
The device, the subject of this invention is intended as an improvement in the construction of a type of brake that has come into use as a result of a desire to place all of the controlling devices of a car into a restricted space. This brake is of the type sometimes called no-staff' brakes for the reason that the staff or rod vertically arranged and to the top of which the hand wheels is usually secured is omitted. A housing being substituted for supporting the hand wheel and for inclosing certain draw chains or cables and other mechanisms which serve in combination to operate the brake proper.
In our invention we have Produced a means for obtaining a differential transmission for operating a chain, this differential imparting a draw upon the brake of the required speed and of a desirable force.
Other improvements and the advantages of the construction will be noted as the specification progresses.
The following is what we consider the best means of carrying out this invention.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the housing and wheel and sheaves, the chain is shown in dotted lines. F 2 is a side elevation partly in section of the parts showing our improvements.
Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in all the figures where they appear.
In setting forth our invention we have shown certain elements that are well known and that will require no description. These elements or members are principally the hand wheel 1, the brake draw bar 2, and the platform or car floor shown at 3, all of which are arranged in a customary and conventional position.
A housing 4: secured at a convenient place upon the platform is provided with a removable cap 5, which together with the upper end of the housing accommodates two alined bearings 6 and 7 and in these bearings and rotatable therein we arrange a shaft 8 upon a protruding end of which the hand wheel 1 is secured. Upon this shaft 8 is also secured two sheaves of different diameters as shown at 9 and 10, and although we have secured each of these sheaves to the shaft it is obvious that one of the sheaves may be secured by being keyed to the shaft and the other sheave may be secured by being bolted to the keyed sheave, this construction will allow the ratio of the sheaves to be changed by a quick substitution for the bolted sheaves of one of a different size.
Passing over the sheaves 9 and 10 we have arranged a continuous chain having a downwardly depending loop 11 and two additional downward extending ends 12 and 13. The chain passes around the larger sheave 10 through the loop 11 around the smaller sheave 9 and then on downward, through a suitable hole 14 in the platform of the car.
Arranged upon the under side of the platform we provide suitable brackets 15 and 16 which serve to support a strong shaft or pin 17 and upon this shaft we arrange two sheaves 18 and 19 of about the same diameter, these sheaves are free to turn independently upon the pin 17 and one of the sheaves 19 has the face over which the chain passes free and unobstructed, while the chain face or race of the other sheave is provided with pockets 20 into which the links of the chain will engage while passing.
Formed integral with the sheave 18 or reliably secured thereto we have arranged a ratchet 21 and secured in the bracket 16 and immediately over the ratchet 21 we provide a dog 22 which is pivoted at 23 and is operated by a foot plunger 24, which extends up ward to the upper face of the platform 3. This foot plunger 24: is also pivoted to the dog or pawl 22 as shown at 25, and the perforation or hole in the platform through which the plunger 24 passes is of a size suiiicient to allow a free unrestricted motion to be transmitted from the foot of the operator to the dog or pawl. The combination of the dog and ratchet with the sheave 18 serves to Y hold the chain in any position to which it -may. be drawn, in a manner that is readily understood.
It will be seen that because of the difference in the diameters of the sheaves 9 and 10 both of which are rotated upon the same shaft that a difierential action is obtained, the sheave 10 serving to take up the chain more rapidly than the sheave 9 can pay it out Withthe result that the loop 11 will continually increase in length and the applied force will be in a direct ratio to the ratios of the diameters of the sheaves 9 and 10. After passing over the sheaves 1S and 19 the chain almost completely encircles a suitable Wheel 26 arranged in the end of the brake draw bar or pull rod 2 and supported upon a pin therein, and upon which pin the wheel 26 is free to turn. The chain is then joined or it may be completed before being placed in position, at any rate the chain is endless and the wheel 26 is received in what may be considered the lower'loopof the chain. The upper loop is shown at 11 and it will be understood that the slack occasioned by the take up of the chain in setting the brakes will lengthen thisloop 11 we have however provided what we will term an adjustable slack-limit rod or bolt 28 which passes through the housing 4 and which also passes through the loop 11 of the chain. \Ve have provided a plurality of holes 29 and 30 into any of which the bar or bolt 28 may be secured and when the brake is slackened off the chain will be free to run out until the loop 11 engages the bar 28. Care is taken however that this engagement of the loop 11 upon the bar 28 will not occur until the brake shoe has been efiiciently freed, but this adjustable bar adds the advantages that it will never be necessary to take up a great quantity of slack before the brake becomes operative and in further limiting the useless number of revolutions of the hand Wheel 1.
Modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing'fromthe principle or sacrificing the advantages of this invention but we prefer the whole as shown.
Having carefully and fully described our invention what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. Means for operating a car brake comprising a hand wheel, sheaves of different diameters secured to and rotated by said hand wheel and a continuous chain passing over both of said sheaves and forming a free loop between them and a pulley secured to said brake for receiving said chain.

Means for operating a car brake comprising a hand wheel, plurality of sheaves of different diameters in axial alinement with said hand wheel a shaft secured in said hand wheel and said sheaves, a draw bar for said brakes and having a pulley secured in its end and a continuous chain moved by said hand wheel and passing over said sheaves and over the pulley in said draw bar as herein specified.
3. Means for operating a car brake or analogous device, a chain a differential sheave device for traversing said chain a plurality of additional sheaves over which said chain is adapted to pass, means for connecting said chain to a brake, and means for preventing a reversed rotation of one of said additional sheaves as and for the purpose set forth.
1. Means for operating a car brake or analogous device consisting of a plurality of sheaves, means for rotating them, a flexible member passing over said sheaves and producing a loop therein, means for connecting said flexible member to a brake and means for positively limiting the minimum length of said loop as and for the purpose set forth.
5. A car brake or analogous device having a housing a shaft rotatable in said housing, a means exterior to said housing for imparting motion to said shaft, a plurality of sheaves of different diameters within said housing and secured to said shaft, a chain passing over and traversed by said sheaves and arranged within said housing, means for connecting said chain to a brake, a second set of sheaves of uniform diameter arranged between said diflerential and said brake one of said sheaves being provided with a ratchet, a dog arranged adjacent thereto and adapted to cooperate therewith to retain a tension upon said chain and an adjustable bar arranged in said housing for limiting the slack of said chain upon the release of said brakes as herein specified.
