VALVE.
SPECIFIGATION'formihg part of Letters Patent No. 413,923, dated October 29, 1889.
' Application filed April 15, 1889. Serial No. 307,369. (No inodel.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VIRGIL W. BLANCHARD, of New York, in the county of New-York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, ref- 1 on dotted line 0c. 1
valveplughaving a rectangular passage This invention is an improvement in valves, which are especially applicable to furnaces for supplying air or pulverized fuel to the same in properly registered and regulated quantities; and the invention consists in a through it adapted to register with rectangular passages at the ends of the valve-box, and which is provided with a calendar for indicating the size of the opening and volume of fluid or solid matter'passin g through the valveplug, as will be fully understood from the following description and claims.
In the drawings, A designates the valvecasing, through which is a cylindrical plug 13, diametrically through which is a rectangular passage B. This casing A is provided with diametrically-opposite sockets A A, the outer ends of which are internally screwthreaded, receiving the ends of pipes O O, and the bore of said sockets adjoining the valve is rectangular, as indicated at ca, corresponding in transverse section and area to the passage B. One end of valve B is flanged, as at b, which flange is seated against one end of the valve-casing A and forms a close joint, and to the upper end of valve B are received at proper points lips c c,w'hich extend over the other end edge of the casing and hold the valve in place. The valve is provided with a key-post D, which can be engaged by a key or wrench to turn the valve.
G designates a pointer, which is rigidly secured to the upper end of valve B and eX- tend s over the edge of the casing, and by the aid of graduated marks 9 on the edge of the Fig. 1
casing indicates at a glance the position of passage B with respect to the passages or chambers a.
My object is to truly and quickly determine the volume of fluid or air passing through the valve, and for this reason passages B and a are made rectangular instead of circular. Given the cubic contents of the said passages, the volume of matter which passes through them is easily ascertained from the pointer and its scale.
By this simple valve, which is practically not effected by change of temperature, I am able to regulate either the supply of air or fuel to a furnace.
Having-thus fully described my invention, I claim 1. The herein-described registering-valve, consisting of a cylindrical casing A, having diametrically-opposite sockets A A, engaging the connecting pipes, and the bores of said sockets being rectangular in cross-section adjoining the valve, with a cylindrical valve having a diametrically-rectangular passage corresponding to the bores of the sockets in section, said valve occupying the en tire interior of the cylinder and suitably confined therein, and the registering or indicatin g marks and finger on said casing and valve, all as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The herein-described valve, for the purpose specified, consisting of a cylindrical casing A, having dia-metricallyopposite sockets A A, internally screw-threaded at their outer ends and having the inner portions of their bores rectangular, the cylindrical portion of the casing having index-marks g g on one edge,
with the cylindrical valve B, having a diametrical passage B, rectangular in cross-section and fitted in said casing and confined therein by a flange b on one end and bya series of fingers c fixed on its other end, moving with the valve, and the indicator-finger G and post D, all substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VIRGIL w. BLANOI-IARD.
