Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM WEILD, OF MANCHESTER, ENGLAND.
IMPROVEMENT lN SPINNlNvG-ROLLERS.
Speciication forming partot' Letters Patent No. 4 1,333, dated January 19, 1864.
been made with straight tintes parallel to the axis ot' the roller, and in many cases the top roller, working on the tinted roller, is covered with leather, and the leather cover otl such rollers in time gets iiuted and cnt up hy the action ot' the tinted roller, which is a great evil.
No\v,it is one ot the objects of my invention to lessen or remove this evil; and my invention consists inthe use of rollers in machines for preparing, spinning, and doubling brous materials, havlng tintes formed upon them in a. special direction with a pitch'ot' about one turn in sixteen inches, more or less, as irequired. By this means the upper roller will rest upon the tops ot' several tintes, (the manner depending upon the length ot' the boss, thepitch or distance between the tintes, and
the pitch ot' their screw curve,) instead ot' rest- I ing entirely upon one flute, as in the ordinary tinted roller.- In the ordinary tiuted roller, the tintes being parallel to the axis, the upper roller must have a slight (though very slight) ascent and descent in passing over the top `of each tinte and the groove between -every two dures, while with my improved iiutecit is uniformly supported, and will not have the least ascending or descending movement. For this reason tinted rollers made with a screw, curved, or inclined Hating, according to my invention, (though most advantageous Where the upper or top roller is covered with leather,) will be also advantageous when the upper roller is plain and uncovered, or where the upper roller is.fltlted, particularly it' tluted diagonally, according to my invention.
A further improvelnentrin which my invention consists is in making the angle or curve ofthe tintes otl one boss reverse to those of the adjacent boss, so that by turning the top roller, so as to reverse itsends, any tendency to tlute or wear into impressions ot' the tinted roller below may he wholly or partly corrected, as the dotes lormed on the leather by one boss would be wholly or partly eft'aced by the reverse inclination of the Hates ofthe other boss.
The accompanying drawing shows a side view of a roller tlnted according to my invention.
a represents the bosses or fluted parts of the roller, and the diagonal lines the tlutes there ot', which are reversed in direct-ion on adjacent bosses, t'or the pui pose above named.
Whatl claim my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States,
L'The use in machines for preparing, spinning, and doubling tihrous materials ot' rollers having their tintes arranged in a spiral i'orm and at an angle to the axis ot' the roller, as hereinbet'ore described, and illustrated by the accompanying drawing.
2. 'lne system or mode ot' reversing the angle, direction, or curve ot` the flutes, as hereinbefore explained, and illustrated by the drawing, and the use ot' rollers having the angle, direction, or curve ot' the tintes so reversed.
1n testimony that the foregoing is a true description ot' my said improvements I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day ot' October, A. D. 1863.
. w. WEILD.
