SHOE-WIPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,532, dated September 24, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, JOHN RENNIE and FRANK RENNIE, citizens of the United States, residing at Dayton,-in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe- IVipers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will" enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to improvements in shoe-wipers, the construction of which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.

The object of our invention is to clean the soles and sides of boots and shoes by removing in the summer dust and mud, and in the winter snow. The construction is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is a front elevation of the wiper with a portion of the left end cut away. Fig. II is an end view of the same.

Like letters designate like parts in the two views.

A is a cast-iron frame, havinga base of suit able width, with ears 8, t, and u on the front, through which screws are passed to secure the same to a step or floor. The elevated parts 12 o are embraced by the clips O O, and be tween these parts is the flange 20, which will serve as a scraper for the bottom of the shoe.

E is a strip of rubber, which is attached to the scraper part by either screws or rivets o. The rubber serves the same purpose as that of the flange, and one or the other is used, as may be desirable; but whichever is used, it must be exclusive.

The clip C is of the form shown in both figures, and its base is recessed, so thata portion of the edge extends over the vertical part of the frame, thereby holding the said clip in a vertical position on the frame. The clip has a central boss on its base, within which is held the screw 13, the end bearing against the under side of the projection, the use of which being to bind the brush or material plaoedin the clip. Broom-corn or other suitable material Dis placed in the clip over the laterally'proj ecting parts of the frame, and by turning the screw to the right the clip is lowered, thereby snugly binding the contents of said clip. Both clips are provided in the same manner, but the left is illustrated as broken, and the brush material is therefore omitted.

F is a block to show the manner of attachment to a step. In use the shoe is drawn between the brushes, the sole being held in contact with the scraper, and thus the shoe is cleaned.

Having fully described our invention, What we claim,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A shoe-wiper comprising the rigid frame A, with flange and lateral projections, the clips 0 embracing said projections, and bindingscrews in said clips to engage the same, and brush material held within said parts, sub stantially as shown and described;
