OPERA-GLASS HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,527, dated September 24, 1889.
Application filed December 13, 1888. Serial No. 293,961. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMIL BRUNO MEYRO- WITZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ridgefield, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Opera-Glass Holders, of which the following is a specification.
7 My invention relates to the construction of holders for sustaining an opera-glass in position for use by means of a handle without raising the hand to the eyes; and it consists of the novel features, hereinafter described, for producing a holder, permitting easy an d effective adjustment of parts to and from the center screw jointly with either barrel of the opera-glass, while affording a rigid support therefor.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of an opera-glass holder embodying my invention as it appears when applied toan opera-glass, the latter being in cross-sectio1n Fig. 2 represents a plan or top view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a partial side View and partial longitudinal section of the holder detached. Fig. 4. represents a crosssection of the holder on the line as as, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 represents a modification of my invention.

The letter A indicates the center screw, and B B the barrels, of the opera glass, which may be of any usual construction.
0 indicates a yoke, and D a handle, constituting my opera glass holder. The yoke O is made in two parts or sections 0' 0 one of which is shaped to grasp the center screw A and the other to grasp either of the barrels B B, as shown in Fig. 1, and which sections slide one within the other, so that they may be readily set to the distance between said screw and either of the barrels for their adjustment thereupon. The section C of the yoke is made partially hollow to receive in it a suit able portion of the section 0. WVithin said hollow section is a spring 6 of coiled wire, which is connected to the section 0 in such a manner as to act thereon with a tendency to draw the sections toward each other. This firmly retains the yoke in position 011 the opera-glass, and sustains it in the desired position by means of the handle, while permitting it to be readily detached, it being only necessary to withdraw the yoke-sections from each other against the act-i011 of said spring for that purpose. The yoke C is united to the handle D by means of a pivot F, the axis of which is substantially at a right angle to said yoke, or parallel to the axes of the barrels B B, and one end of which is secured to the yoke, whilethe other end is secured to a disk f, having a stop-pin 0 fitted into a slot 0 of the handle concentric with the pivot. The arrangement of the slot 0 is such that when the handle is turned on said pivot to a substantially vertical position in relation to the opera-glass said pin rests in one end of the slot, thereby acting as a support for the parts one upon the other; hence by taking hold of the handle D the opera-glass may be conveniently held in position for use with the handle in upright position and the opera-glass in horizontal position. Said slot 0 of the handle, moreover, is of an arrangement to permit the handle D to be adjusted to a horizontal position in line with the opeiaglass, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, so that the handle may be inclosed together with the opera-glass in the usual case, especially when the handle is made to fold, the handle being to that end swung in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 3. The slot 0 of the pivot disk is preferably covered by a suitable washer, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
When the handle D is to be folded, it is made in sections D D two or more in numher, which may telescope one within the other, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or which may be hinged together, as shown in Fig. 5, in which event a slot 0 similar to the slot 0, may be used to regulate the movement of the handlesections on each other.
In the example shown the yoke C and han dle D are connected with a view to adapting the holder to be supported by the right hand. It is evident that it may be readily adapted to be supported by the left hand. The point at which the handle D is attached to the yoke O is at or near one end of the latter, and hence when the. yoke is in position on the operaglass the handle. is brought entirely at one side thereof, thus supporting the opera-glass from a lateral direction without inconveniencing the face of the user.
Instead of the spring 6 a set-screw or other suitable adjusting device may be used for connecting the yoke-sections O C with each other.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
