SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,110, dated September 17, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN TURNER ROUND- TREE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Hampton, in the county of Harrison and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Couplings or Fastenings for Horse-Collars, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to couplings or fastro enings for horse-collars; and it has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall be simple in construction, durable, and which may be easily and quickly fastened or unfastened, so as to permitv the collar tobe I 5 adjusted or removed, as the case may require.

The invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a horse-collar. equipped with my improved fastening device. Fig. 2 is a perspective View showing the parts or sections of my improved fastening detached from each other. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line a: a: in Fig. 1. 4 is a bottom view.

The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.

A and B designate the parts or sections of my improved coupling or fastening device, each of which consists of a casting of suitable size and shape to fit the collar, which is divided centrally at its lower end, as will be 3 5 clearly seen in Fig. 1.

Each of the castings A B is provided'with inwardly-extending flanges O, to receive the rivets or stitching by means of which the said castings are secured upon the ends of the col- 40 lar, the ends of the said collar being inserted, between the said flanges, into recesses D, formed in the outer ends of the castings A B, so as to form a neat and smooth finish.

Each of the castings A B is provided in its inner or meeting face with a T-shaped slot E, adapted to receive the head of a T-shaped lug or projection F, projecting from the face of the opposite section. The heads of the T-shaped lugs will be inserted through the heads of the T-shaped slots until the faces of the castings A B come in contact with each other, after which the shanks of the T-shaped lugs will be slid into the shanks of the T- shaped slots by a lateral movement of the castings A B with relation to each other, thereby locking the said castings securely together.

One of the castings B is provided on its rear side with a shield G, extending laterally beyond its meeting edge, so as to cover the joint between the sections A B of the coupling, and thus preventing the horses neck from being chafed or clinched by the joint of the coupling device.

The under sides of the sections -A B are provided with longitudinal grooves H H, registering with each other and having perpendicular sides, as shown. The purpose of said grooves is to form a seat for the hame-strap, which in turn, when properly adjusted and tightened, serves to prevent the sectionsA B from sliding laterally with relation to each other and becoming accidentally unfastened.

The operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed.

The construction of the device is simple, and it may be easily applied to horse-collars of ordinary construction, which, when-8o equipped with my improvement, may be easily and quickly applied to or removed from the animal, inasmuch as after the hame-strin g has been unfastened a simple lateral movement of the sections AB with relation to each 8 5 other is all that is required to unfasten the parts and enable it to be lifted off the neck of the animal.

By providing the under sides of the sections A B with the longitudinal grooves, as herein 0 described, the device is held securely by the hame-strap, so as to prevent the collar from being accidentally unfastened. The shield attached to one of the sections, as herein described, also prevents any possibility of in- ,95 jury to the neck of the animal.
