A o. D. WOODRUFF.-
CAR GOUPLING TOOL. No. 410,061. Patented Aug. 27, 1889.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVER I). WOODRUFF, OF SOUTHINGTON, CONNECTICUT.
CAR-COUPLING TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,061, dated August 2'7, 1889.
Application iled July 16, 1889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER D. WOODRUFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Southington, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain a side elevation of my coupling-tool, together with a sectional view of the coupling-link, and Fig. 2 isa plan View of said tool with a portion of the couplinglink indicated I by broken lines.
I form the main .portion of the tool of a simple rod bent into shape to form two seats a a for the two sides of the coupling-link, and an intermediate upwardly-projecting guide b. I form this guide by bending the rod upon itself, so that it curves gradually upward from each of the seats a. I prefer to forni a slight upward deflection c on the inner or handle side of the intermediate guide, also to bend the outer Aend d of the rod upwardly from the outer one of the seats a a, as shown; but these are not essent-ial to the main features ont my invention. I provide the long end of the rod with a handle f, of wood or other proper material.
In use the tool is designed to be held substantially horizontal, as shown in Fig. l,with the guide b inside of the link g, while the two sides of the link rest upon the two seats a a. The operator can, when the link is thus resting upon the tool, guide it so that it will properly enter the coupling, and by reason of both sides of the link resting upon the seats Serial No. 317,683. (No model.)
a a the link may be prevented from twisting out of a parallel position to the opening in the coupling. y sist in guiding the link laterally, `but it will eiectually prevent the link from slipping endwise oft the tool.
The tool may be used by hooking it upon one side of the link only and permitting the outer end to go inside the link; but this might not always be effective in case the link was inclined to twist.` In such a case it should be supported upon both sides by the seats a a and guided by the guide b on the inside of the link. In case the tool is caught or struck violently between the couplings, the handle f will receive the jar, so as to prevent the vibration of the tool from stinging,
the hand of the operator.
I claim as my invention l. The herein-described car-coupling tool, consisting, essentially, of a proper handle and body having two seats a d, for supporting the opposite sides of the link, and an intermediate upwardly-projecting guide b, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
The guide b will not only as- 2. The herein-described car-coupling tool,
consisting of a rod having the return-bend to form the upwardly-projecting guide b, and having also two seats a a `on the opposite sides of said guide for supporting the opposite sides of the link, substantially as dcscribed, and for the purpose specified.
3. The herein-described car-coupling tool, consisting of the rod having the two seats a a for supporting the opposite sides of the link, an intermediate upwardly-projecting guide b, and outer end d, bent upwardly from the outer one of the seats c a, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified. OLIVER D. WOODRUFF.
