CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,824, dated September 28, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN W. SWEET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Redney, in the county of Mecosta and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to car-couplers; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described, and definitely pointed out in the claims.
This invention relates to an improvement on Letters Patent No. 315,262, granted to me July 6, 1886.
The object of my invention is to provide a draw-head without spring action, and of such construction that the parts can be readily in serted in a recess in said draw-head, rendering the said parts of simple and effective formation, strong and durable, positive in their action, readily understood, easily handled and operated, and cheaply manufactured. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings,wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved car-coupler. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective "iew of the operating-rod.
A indicates the draw-bar having a drawhead, B, which is formed with a suitable internal recess, 1), in which the working parts of the device operate, and a shoulder, b",whieh prevents a too great strain upon the spring action of the coupler. The lower portion of the draw-head B has aT-shaped slot, 1/, formed in the lower part thereof,which connects with the internal recess, 1), and is adapted for a purpose which will be hereinafter more fully de scribed. A locking-cam, C, is mounted in the recess 1), being held therein by an operating-rod, D, having a square bearing, d, said square bearing passing through and engaging with the cam G. The forward part of this cam O is slotted and has an arm, 0, pivotally mounted therein, having projections c a formed thereon and extending therefrom at right angles, being situated on the said arm 0 adjacent to the cam O. The arm 0 depends from the cam C and engages with the front portion of the recess 1) and just in the rear of the link-opening c of the draw-head. The rod Dextends outward from each side of the drawhead B, and is provided with operating-handles d don each side thereof, which are formed by suitable means. This rod D is provided with a shoulder, (1 at one side of the draw head, which allows the said rod to be inserted in the draw-head to such a distance as to cause the square bearing d to accurately engage with the cam C. On the opposite side of the draw -head a removable collar, (1, is mounted on the rod D, and is held in close engagemeut with the draw-head B and securely to the rod D by a set-screw, d. The handle (1 adjacent to the collar (1 is also removably secured to the rod D, while the other handle 11 is rigidly secured to thesaid rod. The drawbar A is formed with an aperture, a, through which a rod, a, having ahead, a passes, which fits in a depression in the rear end of the recess b. The other end of this rod a is engaged by a spring, a", on the outer end of the said rod a in the rear of the draw-bar A. The usual form of link, E, is used in this instance, and is cushioned by the spring action of the rod a in coupling by striking the head a. A slot, If, is formed in front of the drawhead B, which is adapted to receive an ordinary couplingpin in case of accident to the cam 0. Suitable means may be attached to the handles (1 d for operating the coupler from the top of a box-ear, which means may be of any well-known and preferred form of construction. The cam O is inserted through the slot b and raised up in position in the recess b,and the rod D pushed therethrough and secured, as hereinbefore described. The arm 0 then depends from the forward part of the cam 0 adjacent to the link E in the draw-head B. The link E, being inserted in the opening 6, forces the arm 0 back until the link has passed the point thereof, when the said arm 0 drops through the link by gravity and secures it. Vhen the arm 0 is in a locked engagement with the link E,the projections c 0 thereof rest on the upper face of the said link. lVhen drawheads of Varying heights are adapted to be coupled, one or the other of the handles d d is slightly turned downward and the cam O 1owered,which in turn shoves the arm 0 down, pressing the projections c 0 against the link E and raising the same to the required height as to operatively engage with the draw-head adapted to be coupled. The draw-head in this one side of the said rod and a movable collar and handle on the other side, whereby the said rod may be withdrawn from the draw-head, substantially as described.
2. In a car-coupler, the combination of a draw-head having an internal recess with a T- shaped opening in the lower portion thereof, a cam having a dependent arm provided with side projections adapted to be inserted through the T-shaped slot and mounted in the recess, and a rod passing through the drawhead and cam having projecting ends provided with suitable retaining-collars and operating-handles, substantially as described.
