Ll'IDl/VIG II. THIELMANN, OF BRUNSVICK, GERMANY.
FEED-WATER PURIFIER FOR BOILERS.
.SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,882, dated August 27, 1889.
.Application tiled March 23, 1889i Serial No. 304,427. (No model.) Patented in Germany October 9, 1888, No. l45,708.
To all whom zit may concern:
Be it known that I, LUDWIG Il. THIELMANN, of Brunswick, Germany, have invented a new and Improved Feed-Tater Purifier for Boilers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, which is a side sectional elevation of my improved feed-water purifier for boilers, shown in connection with an ordinary singleflue boiler and the boiler-furnace.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective device for removing impurities from the feed-water of steam-boilers.
My invention consists in the combination, with a boiler, of a pipe connected with the lower part thereof and extending through the boiler furnace or flue to a point above the water-level of the boiler, a vessel arranged above the water-level of the boiler and communicating with the said pipe, and another pipe connected with the vessel and extending into the water-space of the boiler, whereby a circulation is maintained in'the purifier which carries the water upward, deposits the impurities, and returns the feed-water to the boiler.
Upon the arch of the boiler A is supported a hollow cylinder A, containing a cylindrical nozzle CZ, attached to the walls of the hollow cylinder A at a point above the mid-length of the said cylinder. A pipe a enters the cylinder A near the top thereof, and a pipe b communicates with the cylinder A above the cylindrical nozzle CZ and communicates with the bottom of the boiler A. A pipe c coininunicates with the annular space in the cylinder A below the connections of the cylindricalnozzle CZ with the walls of t-he said cylinder A, and extends downward into the boiler at' a point below the water-line, preferably about half-way between the water-line and the bottom of the boiler. The pipe b extends through the boiler-furnace or through the flues connected with the furnace, so that it is subjected to considerable heat. Above the top of the boiler-furnace the pipe b is inclosed by a support and jacket b', which retain the heat around the said pipe.
The operation of my improved boiler-heater is as follows: 'lheboiler being filled with water up to the water-level, the heating of the pipe ZJ above the general temperature of the boiler and water contained therein causes an upward circulation of the water contained by the said pipe, the water flowing into the cylinder A, thence downward in the said cylinder and through the nozzle d, thence upward through the annular space around the nozzle d and outward through the pipe c back to the boiler, as indicated by the arrows. In its passage downward in the cylinder A the water gives up its impurities, which settle to the bottom of the cylinder A, while the purified water returns to the boiler with little loss of heat. The feed-water is introduced into the cylinder A through the feed-pipe a, and mingles with the water circulating through the pipes ZJ c.
Any accumulation of se diment in the cylinder A may be removed through the handhole f in the side of the said cylinder near the bottom thereof. l
IIavin g th us described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent-f l. In a feed-water purifier for steam-boilers, the combination, with a boiler, of a pipe connected with the lower part thereof and extending through the boiler furnace or flue to a point above the water-level of the boiler, a vessel arranged above the water-level of the boiler and communicating with the pipe, and a pipe connected with the vessel and extending into the water-space of the boiler, substantially as specified.
2. In a feed-water purifier for boilers, the co1nbination,with the boiler, of a circulatingpipe connected with the water-space of the boiler and extending upward to a point above the water-level of the boiler, a purifying-vessel formed ot' a cylinder provided with Va downwardly-proj ecting nozzle, the said circulating-pipe being connected with the separating-vessel above the nozzle, and a returnpipe connected with the separating-vessel below the nozzle and communicating with the water-space of t-he boiler, substantially as specified.
3. In a feed-water purilier, a separatingvessel formed of the hollow cylindei1 A, the boiler-furnace-the said cylindrical Vessel A cylindrical nozzle d, attached at its upper end having below the attachment of the nozzle d to the Walls of the hollow cylinder, the said an eduction-pipe, substantially as specified.
cylindrical Vessel being provided above Iche LUDWIG H. THIELMANN. nozzle with two induotion-pipes-one for feed- VVitneSses:
Water, the other connected with the lower BRUNO SILVESTER.
part of the boiler and extending through the LYMAN A. SPALDING.
