UNITED STATES PATENT GEETCE.
TILLIAM A. KIRBY, OF AUBURN, NEV YORK.
STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,178, dated December 28, 1886.
Application tiled December 15, 1885. Serial No. 155,754.
` To @ZZ whom; it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. KTRBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification, reference being h-ad therein tothe accompanying drawing.v
This invention has relation to upright steamboilers provided with internal water-coil, and is an improvement upon the boiler for which a patent was granted to D. W'. Kelloggand myself December 2l, 1880, No. 235,684.; and the object of my improvement is to provide means for rapidly and steadily converting water into steam and superheating said steam.
The drawing represents a central vertical section of a steam-boiler constructed in accordance with my invention. A
The body of the generator consists of an inner cylindrical shell, A, and an outer concentric shell, A2, connected together at the bottom by-a ring, A3, and at the top by langing the inner plate outwardly against the outer plate and riveting them together, and thereby forming a narrow annular water and steam chamber, C, around the nre-box of the generator.
In the bottom ofthe fire-box a suitable grate, B, is located, and under said grate is the ashpit B2. To the inner shell, A, a short distance above the grate B, are attached a series of brackets, D, to support a long coil, E, having its lower end suitably secured above the fuel or the door in the rebOX, as at e, to the inner shell, A, and connecting with its waterchamber, while its upper end is similarly connected at e to said inner shell; and to reach the fastenings, so as to tighten them, handholes are formed opposite them in the outer shell, that are closed by small cap-plates e2. Within the center of the coil is suspended a water-heating drum, F, having at its upper end a horizontal pipe, F', to lead therein the feed-water of the boiler. This feed-water falling into the drum F down one side becomes partly heated, and after ascending on the op,
posite side escapes into the inner end of a fiat coil, G, retained in position about even with `the upper end of the drum and of the boiler.
The outer end of the coil G enters the Water and steam chamber C and discharges its con- (No model.)
tents therein, from which the water enters the lower end of the long coil E, as aforesaid, secured at e to the inner shell, preferably about the same plane with the lower end of the heat` ing-drum. The long pipe Eis coiled inwardly toward said drum to form a horizontal coil, the inner end of which is bent on an ascending spiral to form lthe inner coil, that is then bent outwardly to form a horizontal coil above the first one, and when it has nearly reached the outer periphery ofthe first coil it is bent upward to form the outer end of the spiral coil, that is then bent inwardly, as stated, for the lower coil, and the operation is repeateduntil the desired number of coils is formed, the series of coils being vertically staggered to cause the products of combustion to follow a zigzag course among them. The upper end of the coil is then made to enter the body of the boiler at e. Said upper or discharging end of the coil E is located' abovethe level of the water in the boiler, so that there is no interference with the escape of the steam from said coil into the upper end or steanrchamber of the'boiler.
To increase the temperature of the steam received in the steam-chamber and superheat it on its way to the escape-pipe H, it is made to circulate through a large fiat coil, H, secured at f to the outer shell of the boiler and communicating with its steam-chamber.
The boiler is inclosed in ajacket, I, having its lower end secured to the walls of the ashpit by means of angle-irons i. This jacket has a conical top that incloses the superlieatingcoil H and other parts of the boiler, and in the top it has an uptake-line, I2, for the escape of the products of combustion. To control the draft there is secured to the under side of the conical top a plate, I3, that is centrally perforated, and oversaid perforation rests the horizontal damper K, having a handle, 7c, extending through the conical top of the jacket.
The lire-box ot' the boiler has an opening, L, in the side, through which the fuel is deposited upon the grate, andsaid opening is closed by a door, as usual.
Having now fully described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of the concentricinner and outer shells of the boiler, and its central water-heating drum having a closed top and IOO a horizontal coil leading therefrom, with a water-pipe surrounding said drum, and having its lower end attached to the boiler'below the water-line in said boiler and coiled inwardly toward the heating-drum, followed by another superposed coil extending outwardly, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the concentric inner and outer shells of the boiler` and. the watercoil within, having its lower end connected with the body of the boiler below the water line in said boiler, and its upper end above said water-line, with a superheater located above said upper end, and a heating-drum in the center of the coil, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the concentric inner and outer shells of a boiler, the water-coil within having its lower end connected with the body ofthe boiler below the water-line in said boiler and its upper endabove said water-line, with a heatingdrum in the center of the coil, a feed-pipe entering said drum, and
a discharge-pipe issuing therefrom and leading into a horizontal coil having its outer end entering the inner shell of the boiler at its upper end, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the inner and outer shells of a boiler and the water-coil within, having its lower end connected with the body of the boiler below the water-line in said boiler and its upper end above said water-line, with a heating-drum in centerof the coil, a horizontal coil issuing therefrom and discharging into the upper end of the boiler, and a superheating-coil issuing from said upper end, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. The combination of the inner and outer shells of a boiler and the water-coil, arranged as described, and connected to the side walls of the body of the boiler above the fuel or the door in the lire-box and below the waterdevel in the boiler, and the upper end of said coil connected to the side walls of the boiler, above the water therein, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof -I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM A. KIRBY.
