Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GILBERT D. VHITMORE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SH UTTEFrFASTENINGSl Specification forming part ot' Letters Patent No. 40,972, dated December 15, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GILBERT D. WHi'n MORE, a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Vindow-Blind or Shutter-Fastening; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, ot1 which- Figure l denotes an elevation of it as applied to a window and itsv blind. Fig. 2 is a top view of both, ard shows the spring-catch by which the blind is held open. Fig. 3 is a vertical section ofthe spring-bolt and boltcase of the blindfastening, it being taken transversely ot' the blind, so as to represent the form of the windowsill catch.
In the drawings, A denotes a cylindrical bolt arranged within a tubular or vertical case, B, which is joined to a flat plate or ange, C. The plate or flange G, in order to secure the blind-fastener to a blind, D, is placed against the inner surface of the lower bar, c, of the said blind, and is held thereto by screws. A helical spring, b, arranged within the case and between its top c and the upper end ot' the bolt, serves to press the bolt downward. Inclined slots e e are made through the boltcase or are arranged therein, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. A handle, E, (which may be formed as shown in the drawings,) projects laterally from the bolt and through each of the said slots, which, with the spring, serves to press the handle toward and against the plate C. By seizing the handle at its middle and pulling it in a direction away from the plate O the bolt will be put in rotation, and, by the action of the handle against the sides of the slots, such bolt will be forced upward so as to rise above the inclined'plane catch, F, which, by co-operation with the bolt, serves to keep the blind closed, such catch F being fastened to the sill f of the window-frame Gr. The bolt having been thus raised above the catch F, the blind may be pressed open and forced back upon its hinges until the bolt shall have been carried in contact with and been caused to pass between the spring-jaws h h of a holding-back catch, H, extending from the face of the building in which the window-'frame may be situated, the said backcatch serving to confine the blind in position when open.
In order to release the fastening from the back-catch, it will only be necessary to seize hold ofthe handle of the bolt and pull it so as to revolve the bolt within its case, and thereby raise such bolt above the back-catch. By continuing to pull on the handle the blind will be drawn'around on its hinges and may be closed. The handle, by its shape and arrangement, greatly facilitates the closing of the blind, a simple pull on the handle sut'cing not only to detach the fastening from the back-catch but to draw the blind around on its hinges.
I claim as my invention- The above-explained improved blind-fastener, having a handle, E, and two or any other suitable number of inclined cam-slots, c e, made and applied together and arranged with respect to a spring-bolt, A, and its case B substantially in manner and so as to operate therewith and with catches F H, disposed as specied.
GILBERT D. WHITMORE.
