SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,661, dated August 2'?, 1889.

Be it known that I, IWIAGNUS BENAS, of New York city, New York, have invented an Improved Ilox, of which the Jfollowing isa specification.

This invention relates to a box in which a drawer is pivoted between the two leaves ot a cover, the whole presenting when closed substantially the appearance of a book.

The invention consists more particularly in so constructing the box that the pivot on which the drawer turns is entirely concealed, thus preventing the cover from being injured by its action.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a face view of my improved bOX, showing it closed and the cover partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a face view of the box, showing it partly open. Fig. is an end View of the box when closed; Fig. 4, asimilar View when open, and Fig. 5, a cross-section on line xx, Fig. l.

The letter a represents a drawer open at the top and closed at its sides and bottom. This drawer turns upon a pivot inpassing through one corner of the drawer and through one corner of a pair of top and bottom plates c of the same size as drawer a. The ends of pivot b should be upset, and may be provided with washers, so as to hold the parts a c well together.

d d are the leaves of the cover, united bya curved back d', the whole being U-shapedin cross-section. After the drawer a has been united to the plates c by the pivot h it is, together with such plates, placed within the U- shaped cover, and the plates c are glued to the inner faces of the leaves d. Thus the plates and drawer are secured to the cover in such a manner that the pivot will not in anywise protrude.

The box is opened by swinging' the drawer a upon its pivot out of the cover d, as shown in Fig. 2.

Into the back d of cover d, I glue a semicircular stiiening-strip f, of wood or similar material, having a straight front edge. Against this strip the drawer a abuts when closed, and thus the drawer is prevented from swinging too far inward.

What I claim is 1. The combination ot a U-shaped cover with a pair ot plates e, secured to its inner plates, substantially as specified.

2. The combination of a U-shaped cover with a strip f, secured to its back, and with a pair. of plates c, secured to the inner faces of the cover, and with a drawer a, pivoted to said plates, substantially as specified.
