Be it known that I, JOHN RICHARDSON, of New York, in the eounty 0f New York ancl State 0f New York, have invented eertain new and nseful Improvements in Egg Beaters; am] I do hereby cleelare the following t0 be a full, elear, and exact cleseription 0f the inven ti0n, such as will enable others skillecl in the art to whieh itpertains t0 make and use ii, referenee being ha(l 130 the accompanying clrawings, which forn1 part 0f this speeifieation.

In the onter encl 0f the arms D, whieh are branchecl 01 bifurcated, as shown, is journaled the shaft G, Whieh is proviclecl Witll a pinion H, t0 mesh with the wheel I, whieh is journalecl up0n the cross-bar J, which eonneets the two ende 01' the arms D. I is 1nade to revolve by means 0f 1'ts handle, a rotary n1otion 1' s commnnicatecl t0 the shaft G in the nsual manner. Seemed to the shaft G is a revolving heacl L, proviclecl with longitudinal grooves N and the slotted flange 0 up0n its lower encl. Either formecl as a part 0f this heacl 0r seeurecl thereto is the tenon H, With whieh tl1e wheel I engages f0r the purpose of imparting t0 tl1e head ancl the shaft a rotary motion. In the upper encl 0f the head is for1necl a horizontal groove P, and in this groove P is plaeecl the wire a, up0n which the beater-wires Q are pivoted. These beater-wires are cloubled, so that their lower 0r c entral portions can be given any desired shape, ancl are loosely attachecl t0 the wire a, so (hat they can move outwarcl throngh the slots in the slotte(l fiange upon the lower end of ehe heacl fro1n eentrifugal foree as the head is made t0 revolve.
I cl0 not li1nit mysell' t0 the groove and the wire f0r fastening the npper encls 0f the beater-wires in position, because these may be variecl at will withont (leparting from the spirit 0f my invention. Any device desirecl 1nay be nsecl f01 fastening the npper ends 0f the wires, as this is a 1nere matter 0f ehoiee. W'h ere it is clesired t0 have two of these heads and their beater-wires revolve in opposite Clireet-ions, the shafthas a pinion H securecl t0 its upper encl, and whiah pinion also is made t0 engage with the operating-wheel I. T0 the lower end 0f the shaft will then be seeured a smaller head an (l a shorter set 0f beater-wires, as shown. lt is a mere matter of ehoiee as t0 whether 0ne or tw0 heads are employecl. Placecl npon each of the revolving heads is an endwise-movable collar S, which as it is 1n0ved from the upper towarcl the l0wer end Of the heacl eontraets t-he beater-wires by forcing then1 inwardly in the slots N at their upper ends and preventing the1n fro1n expanding 130 such a great extent in the slot-s in tl1e flange as they would otherwise clo, ancl thus adapt the wires to be usecl in smallervessels, where the collar is movecl upwarcl upon the head, so as not to eontraet the wires. At their upper ends these wires spring ontward When the wheel ICC in Ehe s1ots from eentrifugal force, and thus -spring 01 1110Ve widely apart ab their 10Wer ends. The 1nore rapidly the head is madeto revo1ve by ehe wheel I the more the wires are made so spring outward ab their lower ends. These collars may be made adjnstable either by screw-threads 011 the head 01' free1y s1ide upon the head and be he1d in any desired position by me'ansof pnojeetiona The manner of adjusting this eo1laris i1nxnaterial, f0r it may be done indifferent ways.
Shou1d it be desired, the wires may be fastened t0 the head e and the heads pivoted upon ehe wire which passes horizontally around the upper end 0f the head. I do not 1imit myself to any mere details of eonstruction. The wires may be fastened together ac their lower ende by means 01: solder, 01 they may be1eft entirely separate from eaeh othe1, as 1nay be preferred. My n1ain object is 1 0 attach the wires t0 the heads ab their upper endS and provide the heads with s1otted flanges, throngh which these wires can expand from eentrifngal force, and the a1n0unt of expansion tobe controlled by a eollar placed upon ehe head f01 t-his purpose. The slotted flanges upon the 1OWG1 end of the head serve as a guide-plate 150 the wires in their ontward movement. If i'm is nou desired 130 1imiu the amount of expansion that fl1e wires sha11 have, oben the slide-ring may be dispensed with and on1y the head provided With the slotted flange t0 be nsed in connection with the wires.
Having thns described my invention, I claim 1. In an egg-beater, the combinationof a revolving head, provided With a slotted fiange ab ibs lower end, With the beater-wires whieh are attached 110 the head and passed through the slots, substantially as shown.
2. The combination 0f the revolving head provided with a slotted flange and longitudinal grooves, the beater wifes loeated in che grooves an d passed 'through the s1ots and having their npper ends secured to thehead, and an endwise-moving 0011a1 p1aced upon the head outside of the wires f01 1imiting the 0uter moven1ent of the wires, substantially as described.
3. In an egg-beater, the combinaoion 0f the frame A, 1'igidly secured eo a snpport having a socket in its outer end and provided with a surew-threaded 10d O, a thu1nb-nut thereon, and the arm D, having a tenon E at its inner end and j onrnals ab its outer end, with the revolving head earrying wires, whereby the beate1 ean be moved around at any desired angle, snbstantially as specified.
