G. W. ZEIGLBR. BRAGB FOR TRESTLHS.
Patented Aug. 20, 1889.
INVENTOR WW WIT NESSES':
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE XV. ZEIGLER, OF XVASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
BRAOE FOR TRESTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,543, dated August 20, 1889.
Application filed September 8, 1888. Serial No. 284,950. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. ZEIGLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Braces for Trestles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a sufficiently full, clear, and exact description thereof as to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the said invention.
This invention relates to trestles and similar structures, and has for its object the convenient and substantial bracing thereof, so that they may, when not in use, be folded compactly.
To this end my invention consists of a cross-brace adapted to be pivotally secured to one leg of a trestle with a notch adapted to engage in a projection on an adjacent leg and an intermediate projection arranged to engage the lower end of a diagonal brace attached at the upper end to the beam of the trestle, as hereinafter fully described, and shown in the drawings annexed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 shows a front View of portion of a trestle with this invention applied; Fig. 2, an end view thereof; Fig. 3, a top view of the cross-brace, and Fig. 4 a front View of crossbrace.
The same ordinals refer to the same parts in the several figures.
1 represents the horizontal beam of a trestle; 2 and 3, the legs thereof; 4:, a joint by which the legs are pivotally attached to the beam, so that they may be folded near the sides of the beam when stored; 5, a diagonal brace pivotally attached near the upper end to'the beam 1, and 6 a cross-brace pivotally attached to the leg 2 and provided with a notch '7 engaging the neck of a bolt or knob on the leg At or near the center of the brace 6 is formed a projection or knob 9, on the neck of which a notch 10 near the lower end of the brace 5 fits. The surfaces of the brace 6, which are applied to the legs 2 and 3, are at an angle to the plane in which the projection 9 extends frointhe center of the brace, so that when the brace 5 is fastened 011 the projection 9 and the brace 6 is secured to the legs 2 and 3 pressure from any load upon. the beam 1 hinders the unfastening of the braces 5 and 6; but when relieved of load the brace 5 may be unhooked from the projection 9 and the brace 6 turned upon its pivot to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The projection 9 sets off from the central line of the brace 6, and when the brace 5 is in position it bears against the beveled portion 11 of the said brace 6.
The brace 6, which is applicable to folding trestles of different constructions and is. by itself merchantable as an article of manufacture, embodies alone myinvention in this application.
What I claim is 1. In a trestle, the brace 5 and a brace hav ing flattened ends, a beveled central portion, and a set-off projection formed thereon above the said beveled portion, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose setforth.
2. In a trestle, a brace therefor having a flattened perforated end, a beveled central portion, and also a flattened notched end, a set-off project-ion located above the beveled central portion 11 with the diagonal brace 5 and legs 2 and 3, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE \V. ZEIGLER.
