FRANK M. BLODGETT, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
GAlTER-BOOT PROTECTOR.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,901., dated December 15, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK M. BLODGETT, a resident of Boston, in the county of Sui'olk and State of Massachusetts, have Amade a new and useful invention of an Ankle and Fi ot or Gaiter-BootProtector; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l denotes an external side viewoi' it, as it appears preparatory to being applied to the leg and boot of a lady or person. Fig. 2 is an internal side view ot it. Fig. 3 is a top view of it. Fig. 4 exhibits its application to a boot and leg.
The invention, considered as a whole, consists of a combination composed or" an anklet or leglet and a semi-gaiter or frontlet, and a back band or piece, they being connected together and arranged substantially as h reinafter described.
In the drawings, A denotes the anklet or leglet, as it is common to term it. B is the semi-gaiter or frontlet, While O is the back band or piece. Each of these parts, as ordin: rlly made, is composed of two thicknesses or layers, the external one being of either a glazed leather or a glazed cloth. The internal layer or lining may be of cloth or other desirable flexible material, and be connected to the other layer by one or more rows of stitching or by any other suitable means. The anklet A (the form of which is exhibited in the drawings) is provided with clasps a u, to contine it to the lower part of the leg, just above the ankle of a person. The frontlet is a halt'- gaiter open in rear, and provided with an elastic strap, b, to go underneath and across the sole of the boot or shoe, while the frontlet may be applied thereto. The said frontlet is to be so formed as to go over the instep and down the sides of the boot or shoe and extend back on both sides of the foot toward the heel. The said frontlet and anklet are connected together at -the lower part of the middle of the latter and near the outer upper corner thereof by means of a rivet or button,

Furthermore, there is also interposed between them, and connected to them by such rivet or button e, one end of the back piece or back band, C, which is intended to go aroui d the rear half of the leg and to button to the inner half of the frontlet by a button, as shown at d in Figs. 2 and 3. This back piece ,serves to secure the frontlet in place on a gaiter-boot preparatory to the fixation of the anklet on the leg, and it also aids in preserving the proper fitting of the t'rontlet. The anklet is also fastened to the button d by means of a buttou-hole made in such anklet, as shown atf in Figs. 1 and 2. The separate anklet and frontlet, connected together as specified, allow free play of the foot at the ankle without disturbing the correct positions of the anklet and frontlet when on the leg and foot of a person.
X/Vhile the anklet serves to protect the stocking of the wearer from becoming soiled by the dress or otherwise, the frontlet serves as a protection to the instep and cloth portions of the gaiter-boot, the Whole while being worn constituting not only a very useful but an ornamental appendage to theY foot of a lady.
I do not intend to con'iine the parts of my invention to the precise forms as exhibited in the drawings, as they may be somewhat varied Wit-hout ai'ecting the principle on which the invention is based and operates.
I claim- 1. The combination of the anklet or leglety A and the i'rontlet-gaiter B, the same being arranged and applied together substantially as specified.
2. The combination and arrangement of the leg band or back piece, C, with the frontletgaiter B.
3. The combination of the anklet A, the frontlet B, and the back band, C, the whole being made, arranged, and applied together substantially as specified.'
