onnmr n eoiuniivv, Uu'iED;) or LONDQX, ENGLAND? i Toaib' 071 0711, it may concern.- .lleit known that l, ALFRED (fl KOERNER, a subject of the Queen of England, residing in\laris,"France; have invented certain new and useful lmproteinents in 'lraining' Mechanism-for Ordnance, fully described and rep:
resented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a partlot the same, the said improvements being en1 braced in l"'-r'en('h Lctterslatent, N0. 183,-?3- dated January 113, 113811 Y This invention relates to improvements in traini ng or poi n ti neiap,p;; itusiorrapid-ii ring or other guns; 1
It is the object of ihepresent invention to provide mechanism for this purpose by which theoperationsof pointing; both horizontally and vertically will be rendered easier and can be accomplished"with greater facility and rapidity than in: mechanisms heretofore cone i'nonly-used for this purpose.
'ltis also the tion to so construct and arrange the mechanism for rough pointing horizontally that when it is desired to move the gun to any great extent horizontally in rough pointing this mechanism may be thrown outot' operative connection with the gun-carriage so as not to interfere'with the horizontal movement oi the gun.
, The mechanism for finepo'int-ing horizontally consists, briefly, of .a worm-wheel upon the lower-part of the ginrcarriagc, with which engages a worm mounted on a shaft journaled in a frame pii'otedto the upper part of said carriage, said shaft and worm being operated through suitable connections byimeans of a shaft amthand-wheel extending to the rear, of the gun to cause the uppcrpartot the car riage, and with 'it the gumto revolve in a-l-ho'rizontal path uponthe lower part of the ear riage." The frame in which the worm-carrying shaft is mounted/ is connected to a direct ingle\ "e r, so that when the latter is raised the worm will be thrown out of engagement with the worm-wheel upon the lower part of the gun-carriage, and thus permit the movement of the gun horizontally to be accomplished quickly and easily in rough pointing.
The mechanism for pointing vertically consists of an elevating-screw connected to the object. of the present inven carriage.

pivoted in, arms upon the upper part'of the guncarriage;said screw being raised and lowered-to correspondingly move the gun through suitable connections by means of a hand-wheel located -atthe rear of the gun.
provements constituting the-presentinvention are equallyapplicable to guns of other types. The gun A ismounted in the usual-manner ,upon its carriage, which is made in two partsvia, a base dand an upper part 1). The gun is trunnioned upon the upper part]; of the The upper part Z) of the carriage is mounted upon the base a', so as to be free to be revolved thereon. The base d of the carriage is circul-a-rin form at its upper edge, and is provided with a worm-wheel c, with which normally engages a worm d. The worm d is carried by a shaft 0, jonrnaled in bearin formed upon the lower end of a U-shaped frame j}.
suspended pivotally from the upper part b of the carriage by means of pivots h entering bearings 'i, providcdin the upper ends of the frame upon opposite'sides of the gun A. The
' shaft (2 has secured to it at one end a bevel gear-wheel 7, with which engages a second gear-wheel Z',carried by a shaft? 1:, extending toward the rear of the *gun and provided at its'end witli a hand-wheel j, located in convenient position to be grasped by the'gunner.
The shaft k is journaled in a downward extension y of the shoulder-piece a-, forming one with thedirecting-lever g, which in turn is made' integral with or connected to, the
frame f.
\Vith the mechanism thus constructed and arranged the operations of rough pointing and fine pointing horizontally are accomplished in the following manner: To move the 10o under. side of the gun andworkingin'a nut backward, and thus take the worm d out of engagement withthe worm-wheel 0., \Vith the worm d in this position the gunner by means of the lever 9 will revolve the gun and the upper part b of the carriage upon the base a into the desired position horizontally. By then; lowering the lever g the worm d and worm-wheel 0 will be again brought into on gagement.- To adjust the gun accurately horizontally to bring it in line with the ob ject at which-it is desi td to fire, the gunner will, by turning the hand-wheel J and shaft 70, operate the bevel gear-wheels ZZ and through them cause the revolution of the shaft 6 and its worm d. As the worm d is thus revolved, it will travel around the worm-wheel 0' upon the base a of the carriage, and being connected to the upper part of said carriage will cause it, and with it the gun, to revolve upon the base a. This movement will be continued until the gun is properly pointed horizontally. The gun will then be adjusted vertically to proper position for firing by means of the mechanism which will now be described. This mechanism consists of an elevating screw m, pivoted to the under side of the gun A, near its rear end, by means of a pivot n, its lower end working in a screw-threaded nut 0, mounted and turning in a collar 0' pivoted between arms 1:), projecting rearwardly from the upper part b of the carriage. The nut 0 is provided at its'lower end witha wormwheel I, with which engages a worm 15', carried by a short shaft 8, connected to a rod '1', which in turn is connected to a shaft .2, mounted in an'extension of the directing-lever g and provided with a hand-wheel q. The shaft 5 and the shaft 8 are connected to the rod 1' by universal joints to M, respectively, by means of which connection they are adapted to angular motion caused by the elevation and lowering of the gun from its horizontal position and by the raising and lowering of thedlreetinglever g. To elevate or depress after the gun has been properly adjusted horizontally, the gunner, by turning the hand-wheel q and shaft 2, will, through the rod 7", shaft 3, worm t, and worm-wheel t, turn the nut 0 about the elevating-screw m and cause said screw to move upward in said nut, thus depressing the gun for firing. To elevate, the gunner will turn'the hand-wheel in the opposite direction. When the gun has been-pointed as described, the gunner, by drawing upon the lanyard 1.0,will cause its discharge. The lanyard w will preferably be locate'd,as shown in the drawings, with its end connected to a handle as, mountedin the extension y of the shoulder-piece r, beneath the hand-wheel j, in substantially the mannershown in my Letters Patent No. 394,190, thus bringing the firing mechanism into convenient position to be operated by the gunner without changing his position after the operations of aiming. By thus constructing and locating the mechanisms for rough pointing and fine pointing horizontally, pointing vertically, and for firing, the several mechanisms are within easy reach of the gunner without changing his position at the rear of the gun, thus insuring facility and rapidity in the various movements and the firing of the gun.
. It will be'obvious that the connections for operating the mechanisms for fine pointinghorizontally and vertically may be somewhat modified without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim isof the worm-wheel 0 upon the lower part a of said carriage, the worm (Z, engaging therewith and secured to a shaft e, mounted in a frame suspended pivotally from-the upper art I) of said carriage, the hand-wheel j, shaft 0, and connections for rotating said shaft 6, substantially as described.
2; In a rapid-firing or other gun, the combination, with its carriage in two parts a b, of the worm-wheel 0. upon the lower part a of said carriage, the worm (l, engaging therewith and secured to a shaft '6, mounted in a frame f, suspended pivotally from the upper part of said carriage, bevel gear-wheels for rotating saidshaft, the hand-wheel j, and
shaft k, for operating said gear-wheels, and
the directing-lever g, connected to the frame f to swing the same, substantially as described.
In a rapid-firing or other gun, the combination of the elevating-screw m, pivoted to thegnn and working in a nut o, suspended from the gun-carriage, the worm-wheelt upon said nut, the worm t, engaging therewith, the shafts s and 2, connected to the rod 1' and carrying the worm and hand-wheel, respectively, and the hand-wheel q, for operating said shafts and rod, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand-in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. ALFRED C. KOERNER. \Vitnesses:
