HUGH WAR EN LEE, orNEwoAsrLEUroN-TYNE, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO sin-w. G.
ARMSTRONG, WHITWORTH AND COMPANY, LIMITEnor NEWCASTLE-UPON-T'YNE,
ENGLAND'.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, HUGH WARREN 'LEE,-a I subjectof the King of -Great Britain, residing at Elswick Works, Newcastle-upon- Tyne, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pedestal Gun-Mountings, of which the following is a specifica- This invention relates to gun mountings and has for its object the provision of a mounting. wherein the gun may be given a large movement in elevation without at the end of its recoil fouling the pedestal or a ring of rollers of relatively small diameter carried by the pedestal and upon which the mounting is preferably supported. For the purposes of this specification the term pedestal shall be considered to include the ring of rollers carried by it.
According to this invention, the bearings supporting the trunnions of the cradle in which the gun recoils are slidably mounted on girders arranged above the pedestal and means are provided for moving the bearings upon the girders. Means for connecting the cradle to the girders and for preventing the gun on recolling from fouling the pedestal or the ring of rollers upon it are also provided. The means for connecting the cradle to the irders and for preventing the gun from fouling the pedestal may consist of lugs on the cradle having slots into which bolts on the girders enter. The positions of the lugs on the cradle in relation to the trunnions and of the bolts in relation to the pedestal are such that the breech of the gun on recoiling clears the pedestal.
The annexed drawings illustrate a gun upon a mountin made in accordance with this invention. Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section showing the gun at an angle of 25, and Fig. 2 1s a section on the line 22, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation partly in section in which the gun is at an angle of 50. Fig. 4 is an end elevation partly in section.
A gun 1 is carried in a cradle 2 having trunnions 3 supported in bearings 4 slidably mounted on girders 5 supported by rollers 6 carried on a fixed pedestal 7. The bearings 4 are connected by pins 8 to screws 9 on which are nuts 10 carried in brackets 100 and adapted to be rotated through worm gearing 11 (see Fig. 4) by a hand wheel 12;

on the cradle 2 are lugs 13 having slots 14 to receive bolts 15 sliding in brackets 16 on the girders 5. The bolts 15 are operated by levers 17 pivoted at 18 to the girders 5; one end of each lever 17 engages with the bolt 15 while the other is piv'otally-secured to a nut 19 on a shaft 20 rotated by a hand wheel 21. On the radle 2is an are 22 gearing with a pinion 23 mounted on one of the trunnion bearings 4 and operated by a hand wheel 24.
When it is desired to alter the elevation of the gun, the handwheel 12 is turned, rotating the nuts in brackets 10 and actuating the screws 9 so that the bearings 4 slide upon the girders 5. As the bolts 15 are in engagement with the slots 14 in the lugs 13, the gun is elevated or depressed according to the direction in which the wheel 12 is turned.
When it is desired to bring the gun into a horizontal position for the purposes of loading without disturbing the setting, the bolts 15 are withdrawn from the slots 14 and the hand wheel 24 is rotated, turning the pinion 23 gearing with the are 22, thus moving the cradle and the gun. The gun may be returned to its former setting by turning the hand wheel 24 in the reverse direction until the slots 14 are in register with the bolts 15.
The gun is trained by turning the mountin upon the rollers 6.
I Vhat I claim is 1. In a pedestal gun mounting, girder mounted above the pedestal, a cradle carrying the gun, trunnions on the cradle, bearings supporting the trunnions and slidably mounted on the girders, screws secured to the bearings, nuts mounted on the girders and engaging with the screws, means for actuating the nuts and means for connecting the cradle to the girders and for preventing the 1gun on recoiling from fouling the pedesta 2. In a pedestal gun mounting, girders mounted above the pedestal, a cradle carrying the gun, trunnions on the cradle, bearings supporting the trunnions and slidably mounted on the girders, means for moving the bearings, lugs on the cradle, slots in the lugs, bolts carried by the girders and adapted to enter the slots and means for actuating the bolts.
3. In a pedestal gun mounting, girders mounted above the pedestal, a cradle carrying the gun,trunnions on thecradle, bearings supporting the trunnions and slidably mounted on the girders, screws secured to the bearings, nuts mounted on the girders and engaging with the screws, means for actuating the nuts, lugs on the cradle, slots in" the lugs,
bolts carried by the girders and adapted to the hollow pedestal and having a part projecting beyond the pedestal adapted to support the gun when fired at low elevations, a frame supported by and movable along the girder, a cradle trunnioned in the frame,
means for moving the frame along the girder and means for elevating the cradle.
5. In a gun mounting, a hollow pedestal, a horizontal girder rotatably mounted upon the hollow pedestal and havinga part projecting beyond the edestal adapted to support the gun when Ered at low elevations, a frame supported by and movable along the girder, a cradle trunnioned in the frame, screws secured to the frame, nuts mounted on the irder and engaging with the screws, means or actuating the nuts, and means for elevating thecradle. V
- y In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my inventionI have signed my name this 13th day of February, 1919.
