A.', at present stationed at Washington, District of Columbia have invented an Improvement in Machine- 1111 Munts,'of which the followin is a specification. r f I he invention described herein may be I i used by the Government, or any of itsoflicers or employees in prosecution of work for the Government, or by any other person inthe without payment of "any:

This invention relates to machine gun mounts and refers more particularly. to that type of mount adapted for supporting a machine gun for anti aircraftwarfare The principal object of'theinventionis' to provide a light collapsible structure for thesupport of a machine gum-wherein means is provided for the complete rotation of the gun in traverse and also the readyradjustinent thereof for elevation from the horizontal to the perpendicular; r
Another object of the invention is to provide a counter-balancing device for rendering the elevation I of r the gun speedy and easy of accomplishment, the Weightof the gun in descending from the perpendicular to the horizontal serving to wind up the counter-balancing springs, so that the elevation of the gun may be eflected in part by-the energy thus storedin the springs.
Still another object is to provide my mount with means for the automatic locking of the gun at any desired angle of elevation at which it may be swung by the operator, thus to remain .until the unlocking lever is actuated to release the same. v I

The lower ringis supported in any suitable manner on a plurality of removabletelescoping legs 11, preferably flared outwardly at their pointed bottom ends to give added stability to the mount. w

In assemblingthe springs 21 on the aforesaid shaft and bearing sleeves, the cradle platesare swung upward with the shaft to of shaft 20- will serve to bringthe springs into tension, thus storing up energy therein so that the elevation of the gun may be effected with the assistance of that energy;

The end of the sleeve is threaded and nuts 29 are threaded thereon, one on each side of the quadrant, to hold the same in fixed relation to the sleeve; Fixed to shaft 20 between the end of sleeve 17 and the'cradle, I provide a bell crank unit30, alocking-arm 31 on the outer side thereof, having a per forated head positioned toswing in the arc of an arcuate perforation 28 in quadrant 28. A locking screw 32is carried in the perforated head of said locking arm and extends through the 'arcuate perforation 28, a nut 33 on the screw being interposed between the arm and quadrant. A jam nut 34 is screwed to the outer end of locking screw 32 and an arm 35 is fixed thereto in.

Spring 41 is positioned between the outer end'of the lever outward,thus to normally direct jam nut arm 35 into the engage the quadrant to lock the elevating mechanism in stationary relation with the "fixed'parts of the mount. It will thus be seen thatin. order to swing the gun vertioally about the pivoting line, it will be nec- V essaliy for the operator to first release the locking mechanism by pressing lever 38 toward grip 37, thus actuating jam nut 34 from engagement with the fixed quadrant, thereby freeing the gun for elevation or deflection'by the actuating arm 36.
