CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,806, dated August 13, 1889.

.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM D. LAYM-AN, of Littlc Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car- Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in carconplings; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of one end of a ear provided with my improvedcoupling. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the improved coupling; Fig. Ll, an en d View of same; Fig. 5, a longitudinal section of two couplings coupled or united as in use, and Fig. (i is a detail view of the coupling-pin.
The draw-head A maybe secured to the car- B in any suitable manner. At its forward ond the draw-head has a recess or opening C, the top wall of which is slotted at d to receive the pin-latch D, and is extended forward and formed at its extremity E to operate as a bumper. Vithin this draw-head I support the pin F, and near to such pin, preferably on the same bolt g therewith, I pivot the inner or rear end of the link G, the lower wall of the draw-head being inclined at H to support such link and havin gits inclined face grooved at 7L 7L', the grooves 7L being arranged to receive the arms of the link when the latter is at rest, and the groove h to receive the pin in the uncoupled position thereof.
As stated above, the link and the pin pivot on the same bolt g, which latter is extended at g to form pivot bearing or supports for the rear ends of side arms rof link-adjusting bail I, the cross-bar of which 'is movable in front of the lower forward edge of the drawhead and engages the link at such point, so the lifting'of the bail on its pivot may operate to adjust the height of the outer end of the link, as will be understood from the drawings.
The pin F is pivoted on bolt g, and is provided in rear of its pivot with a trip-extension f, arranged when the pin is in uncoupled position for engagement by the entering end of a link on a meeting draw-head.

In turning back to coupled position the point of the pin engages the under side of latch D near its rear end, and lifts such end so the pin can pass in rear of the latch, by which it will be held to secure the link, which latter can be conveniently released 'by lifting the rear end of the latch, as will be seen. This latch will ordinarily operate properly by gravity; but, if desired, a spring D may be arranged to press on its upper side, as shown, and so aid in holding the latch down.
To enable the convenient operation of the latch D and the link-adjusting bail from either side of the car, I provide a shaft J, journaled to the end of the car above the drawhead, extended at its ends to the opposite sides of the car, and provided at such ends with the crank-handles j, by which it may be turned by a brakeman at either side of the' car. On this shaft I provide arms J J2, connected, respectively, with the pin-latch and the link-bail, so the turning of the shaft may operate to lift the pin-latch and the link-adjusting bail. In the operation of the shaft a slight turning of same will serve to release the pin, while a further turning will adjust the link to the desired height. By this construction it will be seen the same shaft or part operates to release the pin when the parts `are coupled and to adjust the link to properly engage the approaching draw-head when the parts are being coupled.
In describing the particular construction of my coupling-pin, it may be said to be formed IOO of a rod of metal bent between its ends to form the eyef' for the pivot-bolt g and to provide the extension f, as shown. I thus provide a simple construction, which can be conveniently forged as desired.
In operation, when the links of two meeting couplings are lowered, the couplings may meet without coupling, the bumpers meeting before the lowered links engage, so that the cars will not be coupled automatically in shifting about in a car-yard; but by properly lifting one link of two meeting draw-heads the lifted lilik will slide up the incline of the other draw-head and into contact with the tripping projection of the pin, turning the pin up and completing the coupling, as will be understood from the drawings.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new ism l. In a car-coupling, the combination of the draw-head having an incline up which to direct the approaching link, and having such incline provided with grooves extended in the direction of its length and opening at the front or forward end of said incline, and the link pivoted at its rear end and having its side arms arranged to rest in said grooves, substantially as set fort-h.
2. In a car-coupling, the draw-head having its lower portion formed with a guide-incline and its upper portion extended in Iadvance of such incline, forming a bumper, combined with the pivoted link, adjusting-bail, the coupling-pin, and the latch therefor, substantially as set forth.
An improved car-coupling having a pivoted coupling-pin, a latch for securing the same, and a link, and having its draw-head formed with an incline grooved to receive the arms of the link and the pin, substantially as set forth.
4. In a car-coupling, a draw-head A, formed with a recess or opening C, having its top wall slotted at (l and extended to form the bumper E, and its lower wall formed with an inclined face H, grooved at h to receive the arms of the link and at h to receive the coupling-pin, substantially as set forth.
5. In a car-coupling, a pivoted coupling-pin bent from a rod of metal and formed with an eye to receive the pivot-bolt, and with a tri pextension, substantially as set forth.
G. In a car-coupling, the combination of the draw-head having inclined face II, the link pivoted to the draw-head, the link-adjusting bail, the coupling-pin having a tri p-cxtcnsion, the pin-latch, the shaft J, and arms on said shaft connected with the link-adjusting bail and with the pin-latch, substantially as set forth.
