CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,461, dated May 14, 1889.
Application filed March 8, 1889. Serial No. 302,560. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL D. COX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Ten- 11essee,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplin gs, of which the following is a description.
My invention consists of an improved railroad-car coupler and draw-head, which con- Io stitutes a self-coupler, and which consists of the defined construction of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed, reference being had to accompanying drawings and the letters marked thereon, making a part of this speciiication; and in order to enable others to understand and operate the same I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- VIiigure l is a perspective view of a railroadcar draw-head with arrangements for coupling attached. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same, showing the position of coupling device when ready for coupling.

In order to operate this coupling, press spring-frame A back into the slot-hole in the upper part of the draw-head, place couplinglink in position, and drop coupling-pin in the oblong square hole D, when the shoulder C will descend and rest on coupling-link, holding saine in a horizontal position to receive the other coupling. Then on the other drawhead raise coupling-pin till the spring-frame catches in notch B, as shown in Fig. 2, which holds coupling-pin in position for coupling. Vhen the two draw-heads come together, spring-frame A, as shown in Fig. 2, will be pressed back, as shown in Fig. 3, thereby relieving the coupling-pin, which will drop into position, as seen in Fig. 3, thereby completing the coupling.
In order to unoouple, raise coupling-pin till spring-frame A catches in notch B, which securely holds coupling-pin in the proper position for future coupling.
Having therefore fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a car-coupling, the combination of the oblong frame provided with the spring and the pin provided with the shoulder and the notch B, all substantially as described.
