Description

(No Model.)
M. W. MGCANN.
Gar Coupling. No. 230,796. Patented Aug. 3,1880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARION W. MCOANN, OF HENRY, INDIANA.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming partl of Letters Patent No. 230,796, dated August 3, 1880.
Application filed June 4, 1880.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that LYMARION W. MCOANN, of Henry, in the county of Henry and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an end view of a car, showing my coupling in position; Fig'. 2, a similar view, showingt-he coupling-pin raised; and Fig.3, a longitudinal section through the draw-bar.
The object of my invention is to furnish an effective and economical means for coupling and uncoupling railroad-cars; and to this end itconsists in the combination and arrangement of certain devices, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and speciticall y set forth in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and arrangement.
A represents a car-body, which is provided with draw-bar B and bumpers C C. The drawbaris furnished with spiral spring' a and plug' or block b, which is stepped or notched at its forward underside, as fully shown in Fig. 3.
c represents a stop-bolt, which extends from side to side of the draw-bar, just back of its month, for the purpose of preventing the plug bfroin being pushed entirely out by the spring.
d represents the coupling-pin, which is connected to levers e e by means of a pivot-bolt passing through them. These levers are at their opposite ends' pivoted to upright levers ff and short standards or lugs gg on thc bumpers, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2.
h IL are rods which connect the levers, and by means ot' which the coupling-pins may be operated.
' K K represent springs, whose outer ends are secured to the bumpers, and whose inner ends are bent backward to form a slot through which (No model.)
the pivot-bolt connecting the levers e c and coupling-pin d passes. The object of these springs is to force the pin down quickly when the plug I) is pushed back by the link.
m represents a vertical rod, whose lower end is secured to one ot' the levers c e, and whose upper end is provided with handle O, thus enabling a man from the top of the carto disconnect or unconplc them when desired.
In operation, the pin is raised by means of the levers or rod from the sides or top of the car, and the block or plug I) is forced by its springunder the pin, holding it up. Theother car, with the link in position, being now backed up,tl1elink will strike thenolch or step in the block band force said block back, releasing the pin d, which is quickly dropped through the draw-head and link by the laction of the springs K K.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with coupling-pin d, of the levers c e, pivoted thereto and provided with spring or springs fortorcing the pin quickly in vposition to couple the cars, substantially in the manner herein set forth.
2. The combination, in a ear-coupler, of the pin d, levers c andf, connecting-rods It lz., and
`springs K, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination, in a car-coupling, of levers e and f, connecting-rods h It, springs K, pin d, plug b, spring a., stop-bolt c, Iand drawhead B, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose speciiied.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention l affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARION W. MOOANN.
