Description

E. B. WILSEY. GOMBINED FLOURGHEST AND SIPTER.
(No Model.)
Patented Aug. 13
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EBEN B. VVILSEY, OF AURORA, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED FLOUR CHEST AND SIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,780, dated August 13, 1889.
Application filed March 22, 1889. Serial No. 304,243. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EBEN B. VVILSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Combined Flour Chest and Sifter, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to a combined flour chest and sifter, and has for its object to provide a chest designed to contain flour, meal, or the like, with means whereby the same may be screened or sifted before being used; and the invention consists in the arrangement and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
I11 the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved flour chest and sifter with the lid thrown back to show the arrangement of the screen and the agitator or shaker. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the lineman of Fig. 1.
In the above drawings, A indicates a chest designed to contain the material, said chest being constructed of any suitable material, preferably of wood, and of any suitable dimension s, and provided at its top with a hinged lid B. At a suitable point within the chest, preferably near the lower end, is arranged a horizontal partition 0, provided with an annular opening 0. Beneath the partition 0, and transversely of the chest, is secured a barD, and between said bar and the partition is arranged a screen E, which is secured to the under side of said partition.
The means that I employ for shaking or agitating the 1naterial,wh ereby the same may be screened, consists of adisk F, composed of the hub the rim f, and the radial arms f said disk being adapted to fit and operate within the annular opening of the partition 0, and being secured to ashaft fiwhich passes through the screen and has its bearing in the bar D.
For conveniently operating the shaker from the outside of the chest, I employ the following means: To the lower projecting end of the shaft f is fixed a crank-ar1n G, provided at its outer end with an aperture g, designed to receive the bent end of an operating-rod H, which passes through the front side of the chest and is provided with a handle g.
It will be seen that when the rod G is opelated the shakerF will be oscillated through the medium of the crank-arm G, thus causing the material to be screened.
For receiving the screened material I provide the chest A with a drawer I, which is adapted to be slid in and out of the same, said drawer being supported within the chest in any suitable 1nanneras, for instance, by means of supporting-cleats i.
It will be seen that by the use of my device the necessity of using a screen separate from the chest containing the material is avoided, and its advantages will be readily seen and appreciated by domestics. Furthermore, the device is very simple and can be constructed very cheaply.
Having thus described my invention, I claim In a combined flour chest and sifter, the combinatiomwith a box or receptacle for containing the material, of a horizontal partition arranged in said box and provided with an annular opening, a rigid screen located below said partition and secured to the same, and a shaker adapted to fit and operate within the opening of the partition, said shaker having substantially the form of a wheel, the ribs or arms whereof form chambersfor the material, the upper edges being flush with the upper edge of the partition, and means for oscillating said shaker from the outside of the box, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EBEN B. \VILSEY.
