'r s PATENT OF IC FRANK BENNETT, or nnLivrAn, NEW YORK.
FLOUR-SIFTER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Delmar, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Flour-Sifter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to kitchen utensils, and has particular reference to flour sifters.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth of a simple and cheap construction and adapted for a rapid sifting operation.
The foregoing and other objects of the invention will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the drawings forming a part of this specification in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a preferred form of my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the rotary member and its support detached from the shell.
The several parts of this device may be made of any suitable materials, and the relative sizes and proportions, as well as the general design of the mechanism, may be varied to a considerable extent without departing from the spirit of the invention hereinafter more fully described and specifically claimed.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I show at 10 a shell preferably of cylindrical form having an open top and a bottom open but for a flange 11 secured thereto in any suitable manner, said flange being inclined downwardly slightly toward the vertical axis of the device.
At 12 I show a screen or agitating member of peculiar form and construction fitted within the shell 10 and resting normally upon the upper surface of the flange 11. Said agitator 12 comprises an upwardly curved screen 13 preferably in the form of a hemisphere whose diameter is substantially equal to the inner diameter of the shell. Said screen is secured to and supported by-a peculiar construction of framework comprising an annular base 1 1 and a pair of bows 15 connected at their lower ends to the annulus 141 and crossing each other in the vertical axis of the agitator.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 12, 1915. Application filed July 8, 1914. Serial no, 849,722.
This framework constitutes a-reliable sup- 7 port or binder for both the lower edge of the screen andthe dome portion thereof in practical use.- The screen may be made of any suitable material such, for instance, as a wire netting. The agitator includes also some suitable means connected to the screen for rotating the same either continuously or otherwise. As shown, I provide a shaft 16 provided at its upper end with a crank 17 and secured rigidly at .its lower end by means of nuts 18 or the like to the screen and supporting bows 15. Any suitable means may be provided for maintaining the shaft 16 coincident with the vertical axis of' the shell 10. For this purpose I prefer to use a yoke 19 having a bearing 20 in the center and having its ends bent downwardly, as shown at 21, and detachably connected with a series of ears 22 formed by the circumferential slits 23 in the side walls of the shell. This yoke structure andmeans for supporting it are not onlysimple and reliable in construction, but provide for the easy removability of the yoke for the purpose of removing the agitator from the shell.
I have found by experiment that a flour sifter made in accordance. with the disclosure herein is much more effective and I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I 1. In a flour sifter, the combination of a substantially cylindrical shell having a circumferential flange secured to the lower edge thereof, the flange projecting inwardly toward the vertical axis of the shell, a hem ispherical upwardly arched screen supported with its open edge upon said flange, and means connected to said screen to maintain it in the form indicated and to rotate it upon said flange, substantially as set forth.
2. In a flour sifter, the combination of a shell, an annular flange secured to the lower end of the shell, said flange projecting inwardly toward and inclined downwardly with respect to the central axis of the shell, an agitator within the "shell comprisingan annular base, a pair of semi-circular'bows connected at their lower ends to said base and extending upwardly and across each other at the central axis of the shell, and a hemispherical screen above and connected to said annular base and bows, said agitator being mounted for rotation upon said flange, 10 and means to rotate the agitator.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK BENNETT.
