UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. MCEWVEN, OF RIDGEWAY, PENNSYLVANIA.
ECCENTRlC-CONNECTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,738, dated August 13, 1889.
serial No. 309,885. (No model.)
To coZl whom it may concern.- I
Be it known that I, J AMES H. MCEWEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ridgeway, in the county of Elk and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eccentric-Connections; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates more particularly to eccentric straps or yokes for oscillating the wooden frames orracks whereon hides are suspended in tanners vats, although they may of course be applied to many other uses.
The object of said invention is to provide for holding the pitmen and the strap or yoke of the eccentric reliably in such relation to each other that the motion of the pitmen will be exactly what is required to rock said frames or racks on their bearings without strain.
' A further object is to provide means for the partial or total disconnection of either one of two pitmen from the strap at will. These objects are effected by the construction and combination of devices hereinafter particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the mechanism embodying my invention, the vat being partly broken away, and Fig. 2 represents a sectional view of the same on the line a: 00 of Fig. 1. e
A designates the vat containing the tanhing-liquor; B, frames, which are supported with freedom of vibration on transverse shafts 0, journaled in the sides of said vat, said frames having hides bsuspended from them in said liquor; D, pitmen connected at their lower ends to the inner ends of said frames by hinges d; E, an eccentric turning with a shaft E, which is journaled in fixed bearings e, forming part of frame-work F; and G, an eccentric strap or yoke surrounding eccentric E in the usual manner and detachably connected with said pitmen, one of them being on each side of it for the purpose of operating them to rock said frames on their shafts C. The said strap or yoke G is prefer. bly made in two sections divided on the line a. Each section opposite the shaft has a lateral lug c, which is bolted to one of said pitmen near the upper end thereof. At the lowest point of the strap each section is further provided with an arm G, that curves downwardly and outwardly to a point below the junction of the lug g of said section with said strap. The outer face of the end of said arm is fiat and extended upward at G A movable collar H on each pitman is arranged to be slipped down at will over said upward extension G fastening it to the pitman. A clamp-screw G or equivalent clamping device may be employed for holding said collar to said pitman. WVhen both of the collars are thus in position, each of the pitmen is fastened to the eccentric strap or yoke at two points, one below the other, holding said pitman rigidly to said strap in the proper position for communicating oscillating motion to the frames B and the hides hung thereon. When either one of said collars is slipped up off from the extension G the lower fastening of that pitman is thereby removed, and it is attached only by the bolt through lug g. By removing said bolt it may be detached altogether.
Of course I do not confine myself to the precise form of the arms G nor their arrangement above described. They may extend from a different part of the yoke or at a different angle without avoiding the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
trio, and a pitman, an eccentric-strap surrounding said eccentric and provided with a lug at the side of said strap, and an arm extending laterally from a lower point of said strap, said lug and arm being attached to said pitman independently at different points of its length, the one being directly below the other, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a shaft, an eccentrio, and a pitman, an eccentric-strap having a lug which is detachably fastened to said pitman, and having also an arm G, which is provided with an upward extension G and a collar which is movable up and down on 1. In combination with a shaft, an eccensaid pitman to cover and uncover said extension at will, for the purpose set forth.
3. A pair of pitmen in combination with an eccentric-strap attached removably to each of them at two different points and set between them, an eccentric within said strap, and the shaft on which said eccentric is mounted, the said pitmen being adapted to be attached to hide-suspending frames oscillating in vats and actuated by said shaft and I0 eccentric, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. MCEWEN.
