.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WiLLIAM A. RABORG, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vashingtomin the District of Columbia, have 5 invented certain new and useful Improve mcnts in Stub Envelope-Books; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art ID to which itappertains to make and use the.
same.
My invention relates to a stub book in which the leaves are arranged to form envel- Opes, so that the contents of the envelope may be recorded upon the latter well as upon ply my invention, yet it is evident that the device is capable of being used for an indefi- 2 5 mte number of purposes.
With this end in view my invention. consists in the peeuliarfeaturos and combinations ofparts more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top perspective view of my invention, in which the cover of'the book is lifted and one of the leaves unfolded to receive the money, mediein e,0r whatever maybe desired; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the outside of the book when closed, and Fig. 3 a dctail view of one of the leaves after being detached and scaled up in the form of an en velope. V o The reference-letter a denotes the body portion of one of the leaves. This body portion is provided with four fiapsb c d e. 1) upon. the left of the body portion a is made considerably longer than the other flaps in order to form a stub f, which is'bound in the cover g. A line of indentations, perforations, or other weakening devices--such as 7z'is located transversely across the left flap to en-' able the folding portion to be detached, as in the ordinary stub-book, and each of the fold- The wing such memoranda.
ing laps Z), c, and (fl gnmmed, as indicated by the shading '2'. A suitable dividinglinej between the flaps and the body portion a-ofthe leaf is provided to enable the userto more perfectly fold over the flaps when sealing.
The body portion of the leaf is provided with a number, such as k, which corresponds to a similar number 71; upon the stub, and said body portion is also provided with lines for the reception of a memorandum of the contents of the envelope, such lines or spaces being also left upon the stub for the reception of a corresponding memorandum. The numbers 76 71; appearing upon the leaves are not consecutive numbers, such as are employed upon drafts, bonds, the, but each book is given a niunber or identifying-marl: which is applied to each leaf. For instance, when the book is used as savings-bank deposit- 76:
book, the identifyingnumber 15143682 is the nom de plume given each dcpositors account, and when the boolt used in stores the number given the book and imprinted upon all its leaves Willrepresent the account 7 3 or name of the clerk using it.
. In using this in vcntion the operator opens, the book and spreads out. the flaps b, c, and (Z, andwrites upon. the stub and body portion the amount of money he intends to inclose. 80 He then folds the top and bottom flaps over each other and seals the top one down upon the lower one, and then the right; flap 02 over these. The envelope is then torn off and the money inserted and the left-hand flap folded down over the others and sealed, so that the contents are then entirely inclosed and the envelope ready to be sent to its destination. Thus a complete record of the contcnts of each envelope can be kept, which may be ex-- ceedingly valuable to all persons, desiring It is evident that many slightchanges might be resorted to which might suggest themselves to persons versed in the manufacture of such books. Therefore I donot limit myself to the exact construction herein shown, but consider myself entitled to all such variations as come within the scope and spirit of .my involition.
Having-thus described my device, what-I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1'1. An envelope-sheet having albod yportion I provided with a number or similar mark, in combination with astub having a corresponding mark, said sheet being detachable from .said stub and provided with flaps upon all sides, for the purpose substantially as described.
2. Abook com-posed of a number of envel-r book, a-nd bearing a number c'orrespondiu g to that upon the stub, in the manner and for the" purpose substantially as described. I
3. Abook composed of a number of sheets having a body portion provided with folding flaps upon all sides thereof, one of said flaps being extended -to form a stub, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
In testi'monywhereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM A. RABORG Vitnesscs: R. G. DU BOIS, J. B. MACAULEY.
