Description

(No Model.)
J. H. OARMIGHAEL.
LABEL HOLDER FOR BOTTLES. No. 408,212. Patented Aug. 6, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. OARMICHAEL, OF EMMETSBURG, IOYVA.
LABEL-HOLDER FOR BOTTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,212, dated August 6, 1889.
Application filed March 25, 1889.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. CARMICHAEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Emmetsburg, in the county of Palo Alto and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful BottleLabcl Holder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to holders for labels, and which holders maybe attached to bottles; and the object of my invention is to prevent mistakes in labeling bottles with wrong labels; and the use of my invention is intended more especially for drug-stores. Labels denoting the contents of the bottles are held in the holder attached to the bottle, and whenever any of the contents are'withdrawn from the bottle into a smaller bottle the person also takes out of the holder one of the labels and attaches it to the smaller bottle, thus insuring that the smaller bottle will indicate by its label the fluid withdrawn from the larger bottle. I accomplish this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front view of the bottle-label holder, and Fig. 2 is a View of the lower side of the same.
Similarletters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A is the back of the holder, made of suitable material and thin, and concaved sufficiently to fit upon the surface of a bottle when round or oval.
B is a coating of cement or a glue compound upon said back, which by being heated and pressed against the bottle adheres to the same and attaches the holder to the bottle.
C is a projecting rim on the lower edge of Serial No. 304,764. (No model.)
the holder to sustain the lower edges of the labels.
D D are projecting hooks attached to one side of the holder to keep the labels in position.
E is a projecting rim at the opposite side of the holder, and to which is attached the spring-clasp F, which clasp at its free end bears against the uppersurface of the back of said holder.
The coating upon the back of the holder is heated or otherwise manipulated to cause it to be adhesive, and is then placed against the surface of the bottle, so it will adhere thereto and attach the holder to such bottle. Labels indicating the contents of the bottle are pressed between the spring-clasp F and the uppersurface of the back A, so the lower edges of the labels rest upon the projecting rim C and the edges on one side within the hooks D D. lVhen the druggist empties any part of the contents of the bottle into another bottle, he withdraws one of the labels from I the holder and immediately attaches it to the bottle receiving such contents, and thus insures certainty in denoting by the label the contents of the bottle.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
Incombination with a bottle, a label-holder having the back A coated with adhesive cement B, the lower rim 0, projecting hooks D D and the spring clasp F, substantially as described.
JOHN H. OARMICHAEL.
