LOUIS H. ORR, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
CALEN DAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,041, dated July 30, 1889. Application filed May 3, 1889. Serial No. 309,515- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS II. ORR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Calendars, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
The present invention in calendars particularly relates to the inclosing-casing for the calendar tablets or cards or sheets having the calendar-tables, the object thereof being to render articles of this class of most inexpensive, easy, and durable construction, and permit of the greatest facility of insertion, removal, or changing of the tablets, and to afford efficient means whereby the calendar may be either supported in an upright position from a desk or other stand, or be suspended from a suitable stud or hook; and the invention consists, essentially, in an envelope for containing therein the calendartablets having an opening in its front through which the face of a tablet is exposed, and provided with a flap for closing the mouth of the envelope, which is also adapted to constitute a supporting-leg, whereby the envelope may be maintained in an upright position.
The invention further consists in subordinate features of construction, all substantially as will hereinafter more fully appear, and be set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which the present improved calendar is illustrated, Figure 1 is a perspective view thereof shown as supported by its leg-forming flap in an upright position. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the calendar on a somewhat enlarged scale, taken on the line as m, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a view of the single blank from which the calendar-casing is formed.
In the drawings, A represents the envelope, of rectangular form, consisting, as usual, of a front a and back Z), united at the bottom and opposite sides, but open at the upper edge to form the mouth d, and said front has an opening f therein, through which the foremost of the calendar-tablets 9 may be seen, said opening being, however, smaller than the area of the said front, whereby the overlying portions h, forming the borders of said opening, serve to restrain the tablets from displacement at the said front opening. The envelope A is also provided with the flap j, forming a continuation of the front a, folded over on the back, closing the mouth of the envelope, and is of a length about equal to the height of the envelope, whereby it is adapted to act as a leg for supporting the envelope or calendar-casing in an upright position, as shown. The said flap j is, preferably by its end port-ions Z, folded upon and pasted to the adjacent part of said flap, whereby the said leg-forming flap is stiffened and more efficient in its supporting action.
The back flap 7', adjacent the folding line at which said flap is connected with the front, has therein a semicircular incision m, whereby a tab or ear-piece n is formed,which may be turned up, and, having an eye (1 therein, adapts the calendar to be suspended from a suitable hook or stud, at the time of which suspension the flap j will be folded closely against the envelope-back.
The casing for the calendar-tablets having the front opening f, the closing-flap also acting as the supporting-leg, and the suspension-ear q, being all formed from a single blank, substantially as shown, obviously reduce the cost of manufacture to a minimum;
and, as will also plainly appear, the front of the envelope while in the blank form may be most readily printed, embossed, illuminated, or otherwise ornamented or prepared, and, if desired, more or less of the front forming the borders for the opening f may be reserved for advertising purposes.
Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. An envelope for containing therein calendar-tablets, having an opening in its front through which the face of a tablet is eX- posed, and provided with. a flap for closing the mouth of the envelope, which also constitutes a supporting-leg, whereby the envelope may be maintained in an upright position, said flap having the folded end portions, substantially as described.
2. An envelope for containing therein calendar-tablets, having an opening in its front and provided with a flap for closing its mouth, and constituting a supporting-leg, said flap having an incision m therein, whereby a suspension-ear is formed, substantially as described. I
3. An envelope having an opening in its front and provided with a flap for closing its mouth, and constituting a supporting leg, combined with one or more calendar-tablets [IO inclosed in said envelope and visible through said opening, substantially as described.
