AERIAL CABLE RAILWAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,835, dated July 30, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J AMES BLAoK PERRY, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, 'in the Province of Ontario, Canada, and JOHN MACKENZIE, of Presquile, in the county of Grey, in the Province of Ontario, 'Janada, have jointly invented new and useful Improvements in Aerial Cable Railways; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the aerial cable railway, and is supported on a series of standards. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a car for running thereon, with one side of the same removed to show the construction thereof. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the car with the front end removed to show the position of the wheels and cable and the grooved stand on which the cable rests. Fig. 4 is also an end elevation of the car to show the bolt with ferrule and handles. Fig. 5 is a side elevation, and is a slight modification of the car shown in Fig. 3 for special use on a single cable. Fig. 6 is an end view of this modified car with front end removed, showing one of the wheels and bolt; also a slot in one of the sides to admit of its being placed in running position on the cable. This view is indicated by the sectional curved line a b in Fig. 5. 7 is also an end View with bolt and ferrule and handles with rubber sleeves thereon. Fig. 8 represents an end view of the improved double cable, and showing two cars connected by a cross-bar and running on two cables and supporting a trapeze-bar with basket suspended therefrom. Fig. 9 is a detached sectional view of the cable A, full size, and secured in the grooved stand b with clip over cable b*.
This invention consists, first, in a car which is adapted for a single cable stretched between two standards placed about one hundred yards apart,- with a platform at each standard, on which cable the aforesaid car will run and convey passengers from one platform to the other, one end of the cable being higher than the other, and the car aforesaid starting at the higher end will rundown a grade for about'three-fourths of its length, when the cable changes from a descending to v the trip.
an ascending grade, when the car loses its momentum and will stop on reaching the opposite platform, the ordinary passenger preferring to sit in a chair suspended from the car, while the gymnast prefers to suspend himself from handles-one on each side of the carand swings himself for exercise during end of the second cable being placed contiguous to the lower end of the first cable, the passenger or gymnast can make a return-trip by moving the car from the first to the second cable.
A modification of our invention consists in a continuous cable, which we will now describe.
It will be seen from the drawings and from this description that two cars may be combined and run along two cables supported over a series of standards, when the trip may be extended to four hundred yards or so, and that'a number of persons may form a party and make the trip in a group.
The continuous cable can also be used by a single passenger or gymnast, being secured in a grooved stand on the top of each standard, and having a thin clip over the cable, so that the wheels will pass over them smoothly and easily. The same descending and ascending grade will cause the car to stop at each of the standards, giving the passenger or gymnast sufficient time upon the side platform on each of the middle standards to remove the car beyond the standard and continue his journey.

It is hereby certified that Letters Patent N 0. 4:07,835, granted July 30, 1889, upon the application of James Black Perry, of Toronto, and John Mackenzie, of Presqnile, Ontario, Canada, for an improvement in Aerial Cable Railways, was erroneously issued to the said James Black Perry, as sole owner; that said Letters Patent should have been issued to said James Black Perry and John Mackenzie, jointly, said Perry being assignee of one-ha1f only of said Maokenzies interest in said invention as shown by the assignment of record in this Office; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Office.
