COMBINED MERRY-GO-ROUND AND SKATING-BINK.
Loeaoae.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Sorrrus P. JENSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Merry-Gro-Rounds and Skating- Rinks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to amusement devices and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a combined merry-goround and skating rink, which will serve to teach persons to skate and which will at the same time serve as an amusement device for a number of auditors and will also accommodate a number of persons who desire `to take a circular ride similar to one upon a merry-go-round.
Another object of the invention is to provide means to support skaters, learning to skate, by means of a swing bar, supported by ropes or chains from a rotating carrier so that the skaters will move around the oor and at the same time be supported and be prevented from falling or injuring themselves.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through the ioor and a portion of the auditorium and showing in elevation the center pole and the cars or carriages and the skaters support, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates the easement and machinery pit, 2 the walls and 3 the ceiling of a building for containing the amusement device. A center pole 4 is mounted at its lower end in a block 5 and may be provided with a conical end 6, to fit a conical socket in the block 5. Secured to the pole 4 is a friction disk 7 and for rotating this disk a shaft 8 is provided journaled in hangers 9, secured underneath the floor 10 and provided with a pulley 11 which may be connected to any suitable motor or source of power. rlhe upper end of the pole 4 is mounted to rotate in a bearing block, or plate, 12, secured to the Specification of Letters Patent.

ceiling'. Secured to the pole 4 to rotate therewith 'is a plurality of braces 13 connected at their upper ends to a circular plate 14 and the lower ends of said braces are connected to lugs secured to the outer ends of arms 15, said arms being secured to the pole 4, by means of spaced plates 16. Con- Y nected to the lugs 17 at the ends of the arms 1 5, are the supporting rods 18 for the carriages 19, designed for the purpose of seating several passengers. Connected to the carriages 19l in any suitable manner are flexible members 20 which carry at their lower ends horizontal bars 21 and the members 2O may be readily adjusted so that persons grasping the rods 21, or bars, may be supported while skating upon the floor 10.
A stairway 22 leads up to the spiral staircase 23 which serves to land the passengers or auditors upon the ioor 24, upon which floor may be located a band of music and attendants to assist the passengers to the cars or carriages 19.
Persons desiring to skate may get off upon the floor 10 and if they are learning to skate they may grasp the horizontal bars 21 and be carried around with the carriages 19. rfhe floor 24 is supported upon uprights 25.
Balconies for visitors provided with seats 26 may be provided to substantially surround the amusement device, and the seats 26 may be supported upon floors 27 obtained by means of uprights or walls 28. Stairwaysl 29 may be provided to admit the visitors to the seats 26.
F rom the foregoing it will be obvious that persons learning to skate may grasp the bars 21 and be carried around bv the merry-goround, and that the bars 21 may be adjusted in any suitable manner to conform to the height of the person learning to skate. Persons desiring to ride in the carriages 19 may pass up the spiral staircase 23 and be assist-ed into the carriages by attendants.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that an amusement device made in accordance withmy invention will serve to instruct persons in skating and at the'same time provide amusement for a great many persons.
W hat is claimed is 1. An amusement device comprising a center pole, means for rotating said pole, arms connected to said pole and rot-ated therewith, carriages for passengers supported upon the outer ends of said poles, horizontal bars adjustably supported underneath said carriages for the accommodation of said skaters, a spiral stair-case, a ioor for skaters, and a floor for the skaters. the passengers for said car disposed above 2. An amusement device of the character the skaters" floor. described comprising a center pole mounted In testimony Whereoil I aIiX my signature 5 to rotate in a base, means for rotating said in presence of two Witnesses.
pole, arms connected to said pole to rotate SOPHUS P JENSEN therewith, means for supporting carriages connected to said arms, carriages connected Witnesses: to said means, horizontal bars supported C. S. CLEMENS, 10 from` said carriages. for skaters, a floor for N. S. THOMPSON.
