Description

(No Model.)
A. W. HARRISON. FOLDING PILLOW.
No; 407,776. Patented July 30, 1889.,
UNITED STAT S PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR l/V. HARRISON, OF lVASl-IINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, AS- SIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN F. WVAGGAMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
FOLDING PILLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,776, dated July 30, 1889.
Application filed June 15,1888. Renewed June 29, 1889. Serial No. 815,984.
T0 all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. HARRISON, of lVashington in the District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Pillows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clean-and exact description of said inventiomreference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in folding pillows adapted particularly for use at the sea-shore as a head-rest for a person lying on the sand; and the object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and comfortable pillow, which can be readily folded into a small compass for transportation.
M-y invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pillow. Fig. 2 is an edge View of the parts folded or laid together flatwise. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the parts spread out as they are placed in the act of fastening the band to the legs. Fig. at is a detail showing another means for connecting one leg to the band.
The two legs A and B are formed of wood, papier-mach, veneer, or any other suitable material, and I prefer that they should be flat, as shown; but they may be slightly curved or bent. These two legs are rectangular in shape, except that at one end the material is cut at an angle about as shown in Fig. 3, and the thickness of the material is onlysufficient to give the requisite strength.
The legs A and B about midway of the ends are provided with slots to and b, respectively, which extend half-way across the legs, and these slots slightly exceed in width the thickness of the material, and are cut from opposite edges of the two legs, as shown in Fig. 3.
A band C of leather, fabric, or any suitable material is permanently secured by means of glue, cement, or nails to the inclined ends of the legs. I
That the parts can be folded as shown in (N0 model.)
Fig. 2 is obvious. To set up the pillow it is only necessary to cross the legs and slip them together at the slots a and Z), as shown in Fig. 1.
This pillow can be used as a seat for a child or for an adult if the band and legs are made of the necessary size and strength. The beveling'or inclining of the upper ends of the legs results in forming an inclined rest or pillow. By permanently securing only one leg to the band C and-providing the upper end of the other leg with a series of pins or hooks over which the other end of the band can be caught, as shown in Fig. 4., the pillow can be adjusted in height. The slots at and b constitute the means by which the legs are halved together, and cause a portion of the strain upon one leg to be transmitted to the other. A rubber band or cord :20, or its equivalent, may pass around the legs at the point where they cross to prevent accidental displacement, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination, with two legs, each of which is provided with a slot extending part way across its width, of a band connecting the upper ends of said legs, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A folding pillow consisting of two legs and a ban d connecting two ends thereof, each of said legs being provided with a slot extending half-way. across its width, and being inclined at one end from one edge to the other, substantially as shown and described.
3. A folding pillow consisting of two legs and a band, each of the legs being provided with a slot extending part way across its width, and the band being secured at one end to the upper end of one leg, the other leg being provided with a series of hooks to penetrate the other end of the band, substantially as described In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ARTHUR \V. HARRISON.
